I couldn't help myself....but alas, no confrontation.
At the gas station yesterday I was behind an automobile with both a W'04 sticker and a Support the Troops sticker. The gentleman smiled and said "hi" as he pumped his gas. I smiled back, nodded to the back of his car and said, "So which one are you?"

His confusion was plain and he said, "which what?"

I said, "I was wondering which one you were? The Dubya supporter or the one who supports the troops?"

Again perplexed, he says flat out, "I don't understand."

I responded, "Oh I just assumed you must share your car with someone else because it's not logically possible to support Dubya and the troops at the same time. Not after what his administration has done to Veteran's benefits and the men and women fighting for his illegal personal war."

Darnit, all I got was a. "Oh...have a nice day."

I don't think he waited for his receipt to print.

1. Good one....
"Again perplexed, he says flat out, "I don't understand."......that's the problem, they don't understand. He was probably one of those who "yawned and turned on Dancing with The Stars" after Foleygate.

8. It's really the only way to do it, imho.

We start with cleaning up our own 'house' and then volunteer to assist our neighbors - one at a time. Since neither 'job' is ever finished, it's the activity of a lifetime.

3. Endless Loop
No doubt the "gentleman" (in reality, a warmongering Bush supporting moron) is still trying to figure out your question and comment.

Your question and comment, though self-evident to those of us with half a brain, caught the warmongering Bush supporting moron's logic system in a continuous loop.

5. Maybe the cognitive loop will keep him too busy to vote.
No, no, I didn't say that. I don't want anyone disenfranchised...distracted on the other hand.... :)

While he was telling you to "Have a nice day"

15. Still befuddled. I think he was afraid my nice demeanor was...
going to change into a shrill tirade or something. I would never do that of course, but I'm sure he didn't know that.

19. Standing and applauding
See, that's another thing - To have the courage and also to remain kind and
considerate.

I lose my poise and start being shrill - so until I learn to handle it better, I often keep my mouth shut.

16. Nice job, PP!
Sometimes it's the common sense approach rather than the confrontation that gets people to think more deeply. Hard to get folks to dig deep if their emotions are all that is brought to the surface.

A friend of mine who is a UU minister had a similar experience and at a bank ATM about a year ago. She has a lot of peace related bumperstickers on her vehicle (a lot!) The guy behind her yelled out his window calling her a treehugger. :eyes: So when she was done with her transaction, she pulled back around the building and came up along side him and signaled his wife on the passenger side to roll down her window. She said the wife looked like she was scared to, but did. She asked the guy which church he went to and he proudly responded, "First Baptist." She asked him, "Which one? You probably know there are two here. Which one, the white or the black church?" She then got him talking about why he supported the war and with each of his affirmations of it, she gave him a bible verse quoting what Jesus taught about loving your enemies, etc. After a couple of rounds of this, him each time defending his position, she said to him, "Oh, now I see. It's Jesus you have a problem with, not me."

Both of your approaches no doubt caused someone to think a little deeper about their stance rather than go away mad and defensive. My hats off to those who can do this and do!

An enthusiastic K&R!

So you tried to pick a fight but the other person wouldn't be baited - You know who comes out looking like the dipshit in this anecdote, don't you....

18. Wow, that took a long time.

I figured I'd have gotten that response sooner rather than later. I realize you don't know me from Eve, but many around here do and understand the "alas no confrontation" as a joke. I'm actually quite polite and gracious when I engage in political conversation with strangers. I was hoping to get the man thinking. The situation would not have disintegrated.

But thanks for calling me a dipshit. Made my day. I think I'd rather converse with a confused Republican.

ETA: I wished him a nice day too so if it's all the same I'll ignore your sanctimony.
