Back to the calendar. You have to get past the pictures of the shrub at the top of every month. I do this by slamming notes all over his face. That's therapeutic.

700 more days of the Bush nightmare presidency will likely lead to:

1) Approximately 1,630 more U.S. military fatalities (probably a low estimate)
2) Approximately 200-250 more U.S. military amputees
3) Approximately 29,000 more Iraqi civilian casualties
4) Approximately $18,000,000,000 more spent on the war

(These estimates are based on numbers I got from the Wikipedia article on Iraq War casualties, Faces of the Fallen, and the National Priorities Project: Cost of War. They may not be completely accurate - after all, they are just estimates based on averages so far, and I'm not a math major...but I think these numbers at least give us some idea of the extent of the continuing nightmare.)

the per-day rate has jumped around. It is 2.6 for the whole war, but a 4-month moving average has been steadily increasing for the past six months and is now around 3.2. If you use a 3-month window its 3.3


that would be more like 2200 more if it flattened out from here forward. if the increase continues, there is no way to project. Not being a statistician, I don't know what "window" makes sense for projection, but clearly what was happening a couple of years ago has no bearing now. If you discard april '04 and november '04 "spikes", the upward trend becomes much more profound. Statisticians could argue for days whether that would be "cooking the books" or "cherry picking the data". They could argue if you throw out those spikes you have to throw out low numbers in jan '04 and march '05 as well. So I just look at the past 3 or 4 months as having any historical significance.

Changing conditions on the ground, changing of the mission, could easily put us at double the rate, imo. Could also get our guys out of the crosshairs.
