Times defends hiring conservative Kristol

By: Michael Calderone

The New York Times’ hiring of Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol to write for its op-ed page caused a frenzy in the liberal blogosphere Friday night, with threats of canceling subscriptions and claims that the Gray Lady had been hijacked by neo-cons. ....

“I was flattered watching blogosphere heads explode,” Kristol told Politico. “It was kind of amusing.”

Unlike The Times’ stable of biweekly columnists — including Maureen Dowd and fellow Standard alum David Brooks — Kristol will write only once a week, with his first column set for Jan. 7. ....

Offering Kristol a one-year contract made sense, Rosenthal said, given the increased interest in the 2008 election. But Kristol also had to end his arrangement with Time magazine, where he had been writing a column, albeit more irregularly.

Kristol will remain editor of the Weekly Standard, saying he does not expect any interference, since the magazine closes the end of the week and The Times column needs to be filed Sunday evening. Not to mention, Kristol is accustomed to working weekends as a regular panelist on "Fox News Sunday." ....

So The NYT Hires Bill Kristol, and We're Intolerant?

.... ...Indeed, nothing casually amuses Bill Kristol more than heads exploding, particularly brown ones. Slightly more surprising, however, was the holier-than-thou defense by NYT opinion editor Andrew Rosenthal. My stars, what a self-righteous, harmless-but-slappy little man! He’s just like Frank Rich, but with a few extra tablespoons of Wrong. ....

...Kristol’s been getting away with his thuggish opinions for a while because of this perceived intelligence of his. But he’s not so much smart as he is well-educated and able to write crisp sentences. ... ....

So no, Andrew Rosenthal, we love balanced op-ed pages. But Kristol’s the worst neocon out there, and a hack, one who’s been consistently wrong on consistently more important issues, with lots of death and stuff as a result, and you’ve just given him a pretty damn huge platform for the sake of your stockholders. Maybe the secret plan is to expose his idiocy on a national stage, but you know, not hiring him at all would also work. Either way, I’ll continue to not read the NYT columnists, cuz I mean whatever, boring.

Bill Kristol Gets New York Times Op-Ed Slot

Katha Pollitt:

.... ...That's Bill Kristol ,Fox commentator , editor of the the Murdochian agitprop factory Weekly Standard, George W. Bush's propagandist in chief, co-founder of the Project for a New American Century, relentless promoter of the war in Iraq , ideological bully and thug. This is the man who blamed american liberals for the Khmer Rouge and the Ayatollah Khomeini (!), who will say just about anything, however bizarre or illogical or wild or (I'm guessing) cynical, to push the only ideas in his head: everything bad is the fault of Democrats and never mind the question, war is the answer. ....

What ever happened to meritocracy? For Kristol to get a Times column--after being fired from Time magazine no less -- is as meritocratic as, um, George W. Bush becoming the leader of the free world. A pundit, even a highly ideological one like Kristol, has to be (or seem) right at least some of the time. But what's striking about Kristol is that he's has been wrong about everything! ... ....

see it go under.

I'm sure they're both crying all the way to the bank, but what else can one do?

4. What makes Kristol such a hot commodity?
Why did the Times think that Kristol's brand of foolish, lethal mendacity was so vital to their coverage of the election that they gave him an additional platform from which to spew? Such a precarious line the Times has to trod, as well: Alternately holding themselves out as the Newspaper of Record while discounting that Kristol has been given any sort of a plum, and that it's really no big thang that they're giving over 350 words every week to this grinning ghoul and his special brand of wrong-headed imperialism.

6. Let us face it---Conservatives hold the power.
For the NYT to hire the Leader of PNAC, simply tells us not
much will change.

There are other Conservatives they could have selectd for
the Editorial Page.

Their choice says it all.

8. You let money vote, it votes itself more and more power.
It will use every trick at its disposal, up to and including wild claims of its being underrepresented.
