If this isn't a lesson for all mankind, nothing is!

I see them in a new light.

What a lesson learned, eh?

43. Y'all realize that crows are voracious raiders of other birds' nests?
Edited on Fri Jan-04-08 12:30 PM by fishnfla
One of their primary forage food are the eggs of other birds. In flocks they can destroy entire rookeries in a hour. Of course it would have a symbiotic relationship with a feral cat, another predator of songbirds. A cat would killl or scare the mother bird off, leaving the nest wide open for the crow to eat the eggs.

Separately, I've heard crows are one of the smartest birds on the planet --- and cats are one of the smartest furry things as well.

Cool they both adapted and had (still have?) a fun relationship!

Thanks for sharing!!

My aunt and uncle lived in Johnson City,Tn for a brief moment to sell a rental home they had there.

I remember going for a visit. The neighbors had the regular farm animals, plus quite a few cats and dogs running about they took care of. Oddest thing was a rooster and one of the cats teamed up and were inseparable.

They were always in each others shadow. Grooming, hanging out in the sun, etc.

It was something to see for sure:)

29. Thank you!
Around February 5th, our first child will arrive in the world. This could be a future lesson to the child, that any story like this is a beautiful reminder about the miracles of nature.

Now, if I can get my fiancee to calm down...

27. Yes, they were happy... but very intense...
Any time there's a story that relates to animals and their mothering instincts, she gets very intense about it. From what I hear, when pregnancy reaches the third trimester (she is 8 months along) the hormonal urges return...

26. we have several crows that visit our yard- they are smart
they have figured out to drop the black walnuts on the road and let cars run over them. Sometimes I think they are playing with us by dropping the walnuts on the roof. (thunk, rolling sound) I think they are cool, along with the scrub jays, redwing blackbirds and others that visit us.

This winter, remember to put out some bird seed for our feathered friends.

34. we have ravens here
They are like rethuglicans... They have pecked out the eyes of newborn lambs, then start eating them. There are big groups of 60 or more when the figs get ripe, then they go after the walnuts, now that the walnuts are gone they go after the lambs.
(sorry to lay a bummer rap on such a sweet story. I wish we had crows instead.)

36. They're just being ravens. Crows do the same thing.
Edited on Fri Jan-04-08 10:23 AM by jgraz
Every spring in Madison we'd shut down a couple busy streets so the mother ducks lead their babies to the lakes. The crows would follow them and pick off the ducklings one-by-one. Tough to watch, but that's the way nature works.

It doesn't change the fact that crows and ravens are marvelous, beautiful and scary-smart creatures.

37. We had a cockatiel and a cat who were similarly in luv
Of course, we never let them get close enough to "play", but the cat would hang out by his cage and get serenaded all day.
