Ex-cop agrees to repay money

A former Olathe police sergeant who was charged with stealing $2,250 and a ledger book from his department has entered into a diversion agreement with the Johnson County prosecutors.

The agreement calls for the former officer — Larry D. Keating of Olathe — to repay the money he took, avoid drugs and alcohol for a year and report to his probation officer as required, defense attorney Scott Gyllenborg said Friday. If Keating complies, the charges against him will be dismissed, the attorney said.

Keating, 47, was charged in August with one count of felony theft and one count of misdemeanor theft. He was accused of taking the money between July 1, 2006, and Feb. 21 and of taking the ledger in March.

Olathe Police Chief Janet Thiessen said at the time that she had asked the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office to review the matter, which her department had investigated.

A woman who answered the phone at Keating’s home Friday said he would have no comment.

Gyllenborg said that his client was not given any special consideration because he had been a police officer. Keating had worked for the city of Olathe since 1985.

1. If it is no special treatment
that is even worse. Frankly, given the way we treat white collar crime, it might well not be special treatment and that speaks volumes.
