I'm thinking that a pro-Democratic 527 could funnel money into the campaign of a fringe right wing candidate, like the Constitution Party. Or perhaps air ads denouncing McCain for supporting "amnesty"; the goal would be to encourage immigration conservatives to either stay home or support a fringe Rightist candidate in November. Or maybe ads with paid actors pretending to be illegal immigrants saying how much they support John McCain.

1. that issue could destroy the DEMS chances....stay the fuck off it or soft pedal until ...
after the general. Over 60% of the electorate are ADAMANTLY opposed to most any form of absorption. Plus the worsening economy and rising unemployment rates are going to make this pure explosive. Progressives for once shut the fuck up for the rest of the year on this...let the DEM nominee whoever it is pander and duck freely or I will put the farm on the line and give odds that the DEM will lose.

2. It's already fractured
The Limbaugh wing HATED the Amnesty plan, and still does.

They'll kill themselves off, unless Hillary wins the nomination, then they will unite to vote AGAINST her, not FOR McCain. If Obama or Edwards wins the nomination, they win the general in a walk.

3. Simple. Say "Senator McCain has perspectives worth respecting." .... and ...
... "We feel confident that we could arrive at a mutual policy position that combines the best of all conscientious viewpoints."

Defuse it. Get off ANY suggestion of "open borders" and EMPHASIZE responsible, law-abiding employment practices.
