Help me debunk idiotic RW relative's email about Obama's church
One of my stupid RW relatives sent me this: (along with a whole slew of people she sends her junk to)

Thought you might be interested in this.

Obama mentioned his church during his appearance with Oprah. It's the Trinity Church of Christ. Please go to this church's website and read what is written there. It is very alarming. Barack Obama is a member of this church and is running for President of the U.S.

If you look at the first page of their website, you will learn that this congregation has a non-negotiable commitment to Africa.

Notice too, what color you will need to be if you should want to join Obama's church... B-L-A-C-K!!! This guy desires to rule over America while his loyalty is totally vested in a Black Africa!

Continues rambling on in racist vein and gives this link.

www.tucc.org/about.htm

Looking quickly at the link, it does not bear out the email's dire :sarcasm: threats.

I believe it likely Obama is not even a member of this particular Church, but maybe it has the same name as the one he belongs to. The racists are at it already. I want to fire off a reply to this idiot and her fellow morans.

9. IA, not a good suggestion. How to make relative look idiotic while
getting the other people on the list to see how idiotic relative is?

For one, he belongs to the U.C.C., not the "Trinity Church."

black, some are predominatly white. The UCC is pretty diverse, and not just ethnically. I believe Sen. Obama is indeed a UCC member.

7. Why is it a big deal that an African-American church has a commitment to Africa?
Is it a big deal that a Polish-American club has a commitment to Poland?

And besides that, does it necessarily follow that a churchgoer believes every church doctrine? Is there no such thing as a pro-choice Catholic?

Have your right-wing relative answer those questions.

37. There must be a way to spin it that equality for all is desirable
for all of us.

There are plenty of blue-collar or poor white people who need to get a clue that they shouldn't be looking at things as a zero sum game. Improving things for one group improves things for us all.

That old divide and conquer technique always works with morans - how to get through to them that it is false? And when they claim to be Christian? That's what floors me.

Here is this Idiot Relative, a Catholic person descended from poor Irish people, not getting that.

The very fact they assume it is somehow wrong for a church to back the causes in Africa or those of African Americans disqualifies one for the Presidency is in essence saying no blacks are qualified.

It is a sad fact that a lot of churches remain segregated
Edited on Mon Jan-07-08 04:23 PM by Kucinich4America
Though I doubt it's any conscious effort to remain as such (at least among those who actually READ the words of Jesus Christ) And it certainly isn't by Barack Obama's design that a church in Chicago, which probably existed long before he joined, has an African-American congregation.

Who knows? Maybe the music at the white churches just bores the shit out of them? It sure does for me.

32. It bothers me to say this, but the basic facts are correct

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17701499/

He DOES belong to Trinity UCC, and it DOES espouse a 12 point Black Value system, icluding one which vows support to any BLack Candidate who endorse their values...check it

It's a bit troubling, and I'd like to hear Barak address it directly, we do believe in freedom of religion, don't we? And I do NOT think this means Obama is in any way racist.

34. Maybe the 12 point system is pretty neutral anyway
The Pastor as well as the membership of Trinity United Church of Christ is committed to a 10-point Vision:

A congregation committed to ADORATION.
A congregation preaching SALVATION.
A congregation actively seeking RECONCILIATION.
A congregation with a non-negotiable COMMITMENT TO AFRICA.
A congregation committed to BIBLICAL EDUCATION.
A congregation committed to CULTURAL EDUCATION.
A congregation committed to the HISTORICAL EDUCATION OF AFRICAN PEOPLE IN DIASPORA.
A congregation committed to LIBERATION.
A congregation committed to RESTORATION.
A congregation working towards ECONOMIC PARITY.

Most of the 10 point vision looks consistent with any Christian Church.

And even if his congregation is committed to Africa, that doesn't mean they "hate America."

And many a white church does good work in Africa, too.

36. What's wrong with this?
We are a congregation which is Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian... Our roots in the Black religious experience and tradition are deep, lasting and permanent. We are an African people, and remain "true to our native land," the mother continent, the cradle of civilization. God has superintended our pilgrimage through the days of slavery, the days of segregation, and the long night of racism. It is God who gives us the strength and courage to continuously address injustice as a people, and as a congregation. We constantly affirm our trust in God through cultural expression of a Black worship service and ministries which address the Black Community.
