I expect that the viewers of "A Daily Show" are in for a good, healthy...
...education on the value of organized labor before the strike ends. And God bless Jon for taking advantage of an otherwise bad situation to do it.

:patriot:

Never Give Up.

1. Crossing the picket line certainly does show support for the unions.

2. Yeah, I guess you're right. He should have just enjoyed his "vacation"...
...and let this prime opportunity to turn the network's own greed back on itself slip away.

4. Wow. Maybe you should consider meditating.
How should I know what he's doing with the pay? I simply observed he's making good use of a bad situation.

So a millions-strong audience for an half-hour pro-union message every weeknight till the strike is over is worthless to the strikers?

:eyes:

It looks to me like Jon found a way to do right by the writers, while making sure that his other workers don't suffer the indignities you claim to bemoan here. And neither of us knows the rest of the story. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if Jon was donating his pay to the relief fund.

10. I agree.
It is a small step back from their fear of offending labor and losing their jobs
which they did by coming on. I even bet they talked to their writers on this
on what they should do.

Maybe, they thought they could do something to move public opinion tonight.

I assure you that that message got out to many fans on where they should stand who don't have the time to catch up on what the internet says and where justice stands.

I don't agree with them crossing the lines, but they used their podiums well tonight.

Unfortunately, Labor is a pain............ Right Women? That gives birth to a new life,
that makes us all real.

14. Stewart's performance contract isn't WGA.
The performance unions have a no-sympathy strike clause.

12. He didn't have a choice.
His contract has a no sympathy strike clause. When he was called back, he had to go. Everyone in the industry knows this. The guests, however, have options.

8. he strongly implied that he got his company to agree to the same terms Letterman did
but that the union wouldn't do it for his show. I don't understand it, but that was clearly what he was saying.

He obviously supports the union. If there was any doubt about that, tonight's show erased it.

16. Stewart doesn't own his show. Letterman owns his.
Therefore Letterman could make a separate deal wth the WGA, and Stewart can't. However, it's my understanding that the WGA approved both Stewart's and Colbert's return to the air tonight.

18. It's easier for independent production companies
Letterman owns his show outright and can negotiate. He merely sells it to CBS.

Stewart, Colbert and Comedy Central together made the same proposal to the guild as Worldwide Pants. Unfortunately, CC is owned by Viacom, one of the major studios.

Dick Clark Productions, an indie, also tried to negotiate a similar deal, to save the Golden Globes. They were turned down by the guild, since they felt it would merely just build up NBC. The Globes were cancelled.

United Artists, so far, is the only other company to strike a deal with the guild. They're a bit more independent, though partially owned by MGM.

21. Thanks--I remembered that Letterman owned both shows and I suspected there was more
to this story than I was getting.

That helped clarify it. Obviously I support the writers!

20. Don't you have to be a member of the union to be a "scab?"
According to several of the posts above, Stewart isn't a member of WGA.

Edited on Tue Jan-08-08 12:44 PM by ClassWarrior
A "scab" is a worker who is hired to replace a striking employee. Therefore, neither Stewart nor his audience are "scabs." As a matter of fact, if I read some of the posts above correctly, Stewart was honoring his OWN union contract, which includes a "no sympathy strike" clause, by returning to work.

basically. They are doing a good thing with the really bad hand they've been dealt.

24. Whether or not he's WGA...
...as a union person, I support his return to get out the labor message. Too many regular citizens think this strike is "rich writers trying to get richer," when the real situation couldn't be farther from the truth. This is labor against billions of dollars of corporate power, and someone needs to get out the word.

Get some people on to talk about why they're striking and how it's affecting everyone, and maybe management will come to the table sooner.
