Bush on the night of 9/11: "...we got a laugh out of it."
President Bush: But the day ended on a relatively humorous note. The agents said, "You'll be sleeping downstairs. Washington's still a dangerous place." And I said no, I can't sleep down there, the bed didn't look comfortable. I was really tired, Laura was tired, we like our own bed. We like our own routine. You know, kind of a nester. Like the way things are. I knew I had to deal with the issue the next day and provide strength and comfort to the country, and so I needed rest in order to be mentally prepared. So I told the agent we're going upstairs, and he reluctantly said okay. Laura wears contacts, and she was sound asleep. Barney was there. And the agent comes running up and says, "We're under attack. We need you downstairs," and so there we go. I'm in my running shorts and my T-shirt, and I'm barefooted. Got the dog in one hand, Laura had a cat, I'm holding Laura --

Mrs. Bush: I don't have my contacts in, and I'm in my fuzzy house slippers --

President Bush: And this guy's out of breath, and we're heading straight down to the basement because there's an incoming unidentified airplane, which is coming toward the White House. Then the guy says it's a friendly airplane. And we hustle all the way back upstairs and go to bed.

Mrs. Bush: And we just lay there thinking about the way we must have looked.

Noonan: So the day starts in tragedy and ends in Marx Brothers.

President Bush: That's right -- we got a laugh out of it.

1. I didn't laugh for days.
But then again, I'm not a sociopath.

9. Almost as funny as pretending to look for WMDs in the Oval Office.
I want a president who doesn't think tragedy is hilarious.

I can't believe he got a second term (e-voting notwithstanding) after saying something as insensitive as that.

16. Rev. Lennox Yearwood: "I Can't Sleep At Night"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3j5oMsOAWQ

"So I tell you this: I really don't want to stand here. I really don't want to be here. I really don't. I'm not running down Pelosi because I want to give her a flag. I'm not running down Hoyer because I want to give her a flag. I'm not running down Clyburn because I want to give her a flag. I'm doing this y'all, because I can't sleep at night.

I'm doing this because I recognize that there have been 600,000 PLUS brown people whose hue is slightly lighter than mine who have been exterminated from the face of the earth. I can't sleep at night.

I know that there are mothers like Cindy Sheehan and Helene Johnson who are marching down streets - and they are hot streets - because their babies are never coming home. I can't sleep at night.

I know there are thousands of troops - 612 since this Congress took over - voters put them in their because they wanted a change. I can't sleep at night.

So this is no game to me. All I can do is give my breath. All I can do is speak truth to power. All I can do is come out here and plead for humanity. Humanity is on the line.

So I'm not out here... I don't care if there are 5 cameras, 20 cameras, 5 people, 100 people (ed: or 892 views on youtube), because when this war ends - and we will end this war - I'm never going to be able to tell those 600,000 or one man Iraqis: "I'm sorry."

I'm never going to be able to tell those 3,000, 4,000, 5,000 troops who lost their lives: "I'm sorry."

I can't go back and tell them that Hoyer, Clyburn and Pelosi, Reid and whomever was playing politics, that it was dancing at midnight and playing a game. I'll never be able to go back.

And I believe, because I am a person of faith, that when I open my eyes, when I leave this planet, that I'm not just going to look up and see God, but when my eyes open that I'll look and I'll see you.

When my eyes close on this side, and open on the other side, wherever that may be, that I will then see the 600,000 Iraqis, the 1 million possibly Iraqis, all the young troops: 18, 19, 20, 21 who were send over to die like dogs in the desert.

I'll open my eyes like this and I'll see them, standing there. And I want to open my eyes and I just want to tell them - like I'm telling them now ... I hope there's a heaven. I hope they are hearing me right now ... if it's over then it's over, but if they can here me now ...

This is no game. I'm not standing here playing games with the Senate. I'm not standing here to play games with the U.S. Capital. This is not theatre. I'm standing here because I can't sleep at night."
