ABC News: Edwards Supporters Refuse to Shake Clinton's Hand

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/01/edwards-support.html

ABC News' Eloise Harper Reports: In a sign of just how contentious the Democratic primary in New Hampshire has become, Senator Hillary Clinton tried to greet supporters of former Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., this morning in Nashua, New Hampshire who were screaming, "Status quo has got to go! Status quo has got to go!"

Clinton stuck her arm out to shake their hands and the Edwards' supporters refused to shake the former first lady's hand. So Clinton patted one of the supporters on the shoulder and moved on.

11. That is not a reflection on their candidate.
Only an idiot would allow supporters to influence their feelings about a candidate. No candidate can be responsible for the actions of their supporters.

Perhaps it was rude, but I think it's symbolic of the attitude in America today. We've been spied on, lied to, deprived of necessary infrastructure, and Hillary represents that abuse. She's part of the status quo, and the status quo has to go.

Would you shake George Bush's hand today, given everything he's done to the American people over the last 7 years? I wouldn't.

34. I don't understand this Status Quo charge
What, exactly, did John Edwards do that's been against the status quo? I don't think being an unemployed ex-Senator who not only voted for but championed the Iraq War is exactly groundbreaking, despite his admiral anger and fired-up rhetoric.

Nice to hear that people don't hold a candidate accountable for their supporters' actions. I'm sure the "Hill-bots" who get slammed all the time for reflecting poorly on her will be relieved.

39. If you want to know more about John Edwards, I suggest you spend some time at his site
with an open mind.

You might be surprised at what he stands for, what he's done, and how he's fighting the status quo.

40. I have been to his website
-- as I have all the candidates --, but the problem with a candidate's website is that one is getting the gossamer truth filtered through a barrel of image-enhancing cheesecloth. And the alleged beauty about a website like DU is the (sometimes ephemeral) opportunity to have a conversation with someone who supports a certain candidate and can answer questions you might have.

Thank you for your Reply.

20. True
I just wanted to make a comparison to what Freepers do to their own, and what DU has done to Hillary since she announced. It is not unexpected.

Respect for others has taken a turn for the worse since Bush stole the election in 2000.

7. It's sad
When supporting your candidate means despising other Democrats something has gone very wrong.

I cannot wait for the fucking primaries to be over so we can stop eating our own 24/7.

12. This story by ABC news doesn't make sense ...
So let me get this straight according to these few lines on an ABC Blog, Clinton after hearing people yelling at her and seeing that they are Edwards supporters (allegedly) sticks her arm out to shake their hands? It doesn't make sense ... why pander to people who are protesting you (according to ABC)? I just don't see Edwards supporters being that rude if true and Hillary making that move. I think this is a non-story trying to be a story trying to make Edwards people look bad. The media really sucks!

18. W.W.E.D?
Would Edwards do that, would Elizabeth Edwards, a great lady, do that? Supporters must remember, you represent the candidate and what you do reflects on the candidate. So let's act like ladies and gentlemen. If I could act like a lady in Woodbridge, VA with a Kucinich shirt surrounded by mean Republicans at the grocery store getting petitions, you can too.

32. Here at DU, supporters of Clinton have done things like
saying "I wish I could take Elizabeth Edwards' tongue out of her mouth and slap her with it."

So they don't exactly have the moral upper-hand in this.

But I think I've stayed above that level so far. All I want to hear out of any candidates mouth is how they're going to fix this mess or how they can fix it better than the other guys/gal. With facts to back it up please.

26. Makes sense. That's how Edwards own attitute has been lately...
His speech after iowa, his first sentence was "the status quo lost". raving that the important thing is that she lost, and calling her the status quo. His attitude at the debate, referring to her person as the "status quo". His campaign has been about fight and now anger, and now he's directing it at her saying that she is the problem, it makes sense that some of his supporters will start to direct it at her as well.

30. Pointing out Hillary represents the status quo isn't dirty politics
From the context of Edwards anti-corporation stance it's exactly the thing he should be pointing out about her.

36. Maybe they're bitter. I am an Edwards supporter and I am bitter
He is a great candidate, consistently polls the best against every Republican out there, and has been marginalized by the corporate media in favor of Obama and Clinton. He came in second in Iowa, don't forget - yet all we hear is Hillary, Hillary, Obama, Obama.

I am extremely frustrated and demoralized. I feel as if I'm stuck in a bad reality show. People are treating the election like "Survivor" or "American Idol".
