Assassination fears follow Barack Obama
By Toby Harnden in Nashua, New Hampshire
Last Updated: 1:53am GMT 08/01/2008

Security surrounding Barack Obama has been stepped up amid fears he could be an assassination target.

Massive crowds across New Hampshire following the Illinois senator's stunning victory in the Iowa caucuses last week have caused major headaches for his Secret Service bodyguards and led to extra agents being drafted into his detail.

Mr Obama was given Secret Service protection last May, far earlier than previous presidential candidates. Tensions have flared at events when crowds of people have swarmed around Mr Obama or tried to get into venues that were already crammed full. At a school in Salem on Sunday, a policeman ordered an Obama supporter to get back and shouted: "Do you want me to arrest you in front of your kid?"

Mr Obama was given Secret Service protection last May, far earlier than previous presidential candidates, after indications of threats against him.

23. Um...
Did I miss a sarcasm tag somewhere? Or maybe you don't live in the US, and therefore don't understand that we're a country where a whole hell of a lot people would love to be the one to assassinate the first African-American President. The biggest badge of honor ever for violent racists.

3. Strange that Obama supporters get threatened...
with arrest, but the Secret Service let that psycho Dildo Reilly walk right up to him after assaulting a staffer.

It goes with the territory. I sure would hate to be a high-profile person, though.
Ever since JFK, it's been in the back of my mind...

9. Eight years of Bush has ALREADY given them the ideas.
And more than the faceless "them"...the lonely screwed up people who are normally fingered as assassins. I believe there are people out there in the organized hate groups, like Daniel Carver's Ku Klux Klan or the Club for Growth, who are setting up plans. With or without the complicity of the Secret Service, it doesn't matter.

Besides, the insane ones aren't reading DU. They're reading Free Republic and Stormwatch and their other favorite sites.

What should concern you more are the riots and the government crackdown that will happen after Obama's assassination. Or, to be fair, Clinton's assassination (do you think "iron my shirts, woman" didn't want to use a shootin' iron?) or Edwards's (that gay boy hair!) or anybody else's...

27. I don't think it really matters if it's published or not, the crazy
racist motherfuckers already have their ideas. I've been worried about this for awhile and it's one of the first things I thought of when he won in Iowa. The crazy racist anti-American motherfuckers might not have thought of him as too much of a threat until he started really winning. NOW is when they really might start doing what passes as "thinking" in their dim little brains. It makes me physically sick to think of it, but it has to be faced. I would hope that Obama's people are aware of this and are taking all steps possible to deal with it.

Edited on Tue Jan-08-08 11:57 AM by gorbal
Wasn't it the election year 40 years ago when we lost Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy? That and the effect Obama has on people probably has his security on edge.

12. I've said it before and I will say it again
Obama's best life insurance is Edwards. I think Edwards has come to this realization and would accept VP, although in a perfect world Edwards should be on the top of the ticket. Either way, it's all good down-ticket.

22. I think Hillary would be the best "assassination insurance."
Doubt she'd accept second billing, and I wouldn't want to see two Democratic Senators extracted from the Senate, when we need as many of OURS in place there to have OUR president's back. Filibuster-proof majorities.

Unfortunately, I've had this on my mind, too, for awhile now.

I posted a thread in GD-P a couple of days ago about some really shitty, racist, KKK-like emails that have started circulating about Obama - I've received two of them by now, and from individuals who, DAMMIT, should know better and should be ASHAMED of themselves. And if that's circulating out there in emails, you can BET it's going beyond just emails.

I had a friend who, several years ago, voiced her surprise that somebody hasn't done something rash against bush for all the abominations he's forced down our throats. The only explanation I could give her was that "hey, OUR side just doesn't do that stuff." We aren't the ones with the Ruby Ridge nutcases and Waco wackos and gun freaks and lone wolves who admire the idea of "taking matters into their own hands and settling it once and for all." We're not the ones with the Stephen Seagal complexes who hole up with basements full of guns 'n' ammo and wear flak jackets and camouflage costumery all the time. That's just not what we do. Our side does stuff like sit in trees and stand on railroad tracks and chain ourselves to fences and jump into little boats and go on hunger strikes. Our side doesn't take assaultive measures. And we tend not to take to firearms to "settle" things.

I think anybody on our side will always be in greater danger from the asshole contingent - which OVERWHELMINGLY overpopulates the Dark Side. But, sadly, Obama is particularly at risk.

13. I agree he is in danger.
Unfortunately I know of too many right-wing nuts who would feel they were doing their patriotic duty by eliminating Obama. These are not nice people. They are the same ones who think Obama is a Muslim and his intent is to destroy us. Yes, they are pathetic morons, but they are dangerous morons. We ignore them at our peril.

14. The Telegraph UK doing a good job of scaring away African-American voters prior to SC.
I suspect we'll see more of these scare stories prior to the SC primary...what better way to discourage African-Americans to vote their self-interest. Essentially, the message is being sent, "a vote for Obama will end up killing him," so you need to pick someone safer...maybe Clinton for instance. :(

19. No doubt, there would be people who would hate Obama for no other
reason than his skin color....But remember, if Obama becomes POTUS, practically all his haters would be more inspirational than operational....I mean, some racist "good old boy" who hates Barack Obama won't just be able to walk up to him & cause harm....I highly doubt some racist is going to be able to construct & carry-out a plan to harm Obama...

I'm sure the Secret Service would be aware that Obama would have haters & they'll take every pre-caution to protect him & his family...

29. there would be pitchforks and torches if anything happened to obama.
personally, i don't think anything will happen to him. and he's not my first choice for the nomination.

all i'm saying is if he were to be assassinated, this f-ing country would burn. there wouldn't be a republican figure in office or in the media who's safe, sadly.
