NEW YORK — Goose Gossage became only the fifth relief pitcher elected to the Hall of Fame, earning baseball’s highest honor Tuesday on his ninth try on the ballot.

Known for his overpowering fastball, fiery temperament and bushy mustache, the Goose received 466 of 543 votes (85.8 percent) from 10-year members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.

ARGH!

Congrats to Goose. It's hard to get in as a reliever -- he deserves the honor.

16. Clearly
He's the best player left out still. The Rock should have gotten more support in his first year.

9. A gun fighter. Like one of the Magnificent Seven.
Maybe it's OK if he struck you out, at least he didn't kill you.

I love the closers.

12. Gossage over Dawson? Rice? Morris?
Steroids have blow stats out of perspective, robbing the baseball greats of my youth the recognition they deserve

Oh well.

I stopped caring years ago anyway

19. As excellent a player as Jim Rice was, Boston fans used to call him "Mr. 6-4-3"
Edited on Tue Jan-08-08 03:52 PM by brentspeak
for his alleged knack of hitting into rally-killing double-plays. I think he got a bum rap on that, though.

17. Jack Morris should be in there if only on the basis of his 10-inning shutout of Atlanta
in the seventh game of the '91 series, seen by many as one of the best series ever.
Morris was a man of steel.....and that was one of the most exciting games ever!

21. I grew up across the river from Detroit
I hated the Tigers.

But Morris was the best pitcher of his era.

He'd win 2-0 or 8-5. Didn't matter. He just won.

25. This is wrong
He won more games in the 70s than any other pitcher. That and his game 7 are all he has going for him. Since his career overlapped Clemens, Blyleven, John, Ryan, Maddux, Glavin, Viola, Saberhagen, Cone... it's hard to argue he was better than most or any of these pitchers. Thus he clearly wasn't the best pitcher of his era. His hall of fame monitoring stats on baseballreference.com point out he's on the edge of what voters generally put in the hall of fame. Score above the average HoF on only 2/4. Thus it's no surprise voters haven't been rushing to put him in. He might get in but it's going to take a Sutter, Gossage, Rice type slow climbing up the vote percentage year after year.

31. do you mean the 80s?
He won more games in the 70s than any other pitcher.

Since he only won about 20 games in the 70s I assume you did--I didn't know that about him, but it's interesting.

I agree with you that he's marginal for the hall ...

18. Good for him!
He really deserves it. He was always fun to watch. In the late 70s he was also a sign of the times. A maverick who got in fights, did things his own way and was anti-establishment that could and did win the important games.

Good for you Goose. It's about time.
