Golf Channel anchor says young golfers should 'lynch Tiger Woods'
Edited on Wed Jan-09-08 11:12 AM by xultar
What is it about Duke? Okay, maybe that's not fair. But it did make me scratch my head and wonder when I read what Kelly Tilghman, a former Blue Devil golfer, said on the Golf Channel last Friday during her gig as co-lead announcer for the network's telecast of the Mercedes-Benz Championship, the PGA Tour's inaugural event of the season.

I have not seen the clip, nor do I know the context of the remarks. This is what I know -- that Tilghman, who never played on the LPGA Tour, said golf's young players should "lynch Tiger Woods in a back alley."

Had Woods been white, to use the most heinous crime committed in this nation to illustrate God-knows-what point would have been egregious. But that he's not makes the remark unconscionable. And punishable.

UPDATE...

The white racist asshole has apologised for her fucked up comment. But, I want her ass...

Don't worry gang - Racism 201 is coming.

For those of you who are wondering why I said white racist...it is because racist people come in ALL races, creeds and heritages.

4. Racially insensitive rich white kids
I didn't see that clip either so I don't know the context, but I can't imagine when saying something like that would ever be appropriate. :puke:

Lemme guess, daddy have him a Beemer to shoot the 1000 yards from East Campus to West Campus.

6. This is unfortunate
Especially since I believe that she was trying to pay Tiger a compliment, not spew a racial comment.

Oh yeah, it was a CLUMSY compliment for sure, with the added unfortunate connotation with the word "lynch", but let's not assign to racism with what can more plausibly be explained by mere stupidity.

but I'm be willing to cut her some slack, if she sincerely apologizes. Another incident, though, and the racist label sticks.

10. She really didn't apologize, xultar. Apologizing to "those that MIGHT have been offended"
isn't an apology at all (emphasis mine, but that's an exact quote, here:
http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/stories/2008/01/08/tiger_0109.html

The remark was offensive, period. and using "might have" neutralizes the entire statement. We need to stop letting assholes get away with that kind of thing by using that neutralizing phrasing.

She's a twit who made a hideously racist remark and she should be FIRED. End of story.

Granted, miss thang could have become a racist after she left home but, ironically, adult ignorance is a product of parental nurturing.

13. I love Tiger and golf. So this is my take.
Back when Tiger was starting on the PGA there was alot(as in A LOT) of resentment of Tiger who was not accomplished, getting all the media coverage. Kelly Tillman has a nice ass(they even did broadcasts from her side backside). Well anyway,Tiger has a contract with Buick to represent GM. Every time Tiger won a tournament All the media would plaster a picture of a Mercedes car with tiger saying congratulations from Mercedes. Well they didn't give Tiger any money for that, but thought it was a smart business loophole to make a ton of money of Tiger. Tiger just politely ask them to stop using his image in their ads hence the Buick contract. The next time they played the Mercedes championship Tiger had a bad day and was trailing the leaders. Normally a good player may catch them, but this year they let the greens grow SO long that it it erased the break factor, and all the players were just able to slam it in the hole with the ball rolling just a couple feet past if they missed for an easy second shot( I saw it on TV}. The scores were all so great it eliminated the great factor. I Don't think Tiger ever played the tournament again. It's the first tournament in the year, only an invitation is awarded if you won last year. I have never watched unless Tiger is playing, but maybe it's becoming a hate Tiger festival. So sad.

14. So many people forget, or don't even realize,
That golf was one of the most racist, and classist, of professional sports, and remains so to this day. Comments like this simply confirm that.

One of the reasons I never took up golf, couldn't stand the vast majority of people that played it.

23. Actually, Tiger has helped change the demographics of golf
There are far more people playing golf these days because of Tiger. Also, there are many more public courses available which has allowed the average American who isn't a member of a country club, to play the game. Being an avid golfer, I find your remark offensive and totally off base.

I think Tiger has proven himself in the golf world and is highly respected by the guys he competes with. I know he's had a few altercations, Fuzzy Zoeller and his chicken & collard greens comment comes to mind. A total asshole that proved to the world his assholedness.

But from most everything I've seen, and I watch Tiger play all of the time and root for him to break all records previously held, he's widely respected by everyone and the crowds absolutely adore him.

20. Response from the Golf Channel, equally stupid
The Golf Channel regrets the unfortunate choice of words that Kelly Tilghman used during a recent broadcast and we wish to apologize to anyone who was offended by her remarks. We take this matter very seriously. Kelly has apologized privately to Tiger and publicly on the air.

Kelly Tilghman has issued a statement regarding the issue:

"On Friday during our golf broadcast, Nick Faldo and I were discussing Tiger's dominance in the golf world and I used some poorly chosen words. I have known Tiger for 12 years and I have apologized directly to him. I also apologize to our viewers who may have been offended by my comments."

Additionally, Mark Steinberg, Tiger Woods' agent, has issued a statement:

"This story is a non-issue. Tiger and Kelly are friends and Tiger has a great deal of respect for Kelly. Regardless of the choice of words used we know unequivocally that there was no ill-intent in her comments. This story is a non-issue in our eyes."

22. "I also apologize to our viewers who may have been offended ..." Then, Ms. Tilghman,
you didn't apologize!

This is an apology: "I'm sorry I said something I shouldn't have and I pledge not to do it again."

What Ms. Tilghman did was insulting--and the Woods camp shouldn't have accepted it, but money trumps all and avoiding controversy trumps money. As long as we let this racist rhetoric off so easily, we'll never grow up.
