"Oh my God. I never had so much money in my life," the 84-year-old MacDonald said.
Rep. John Hall, D-Dover Plains, secured for the former seaman first class $98,777, representing 62 years' worth of retroactive disability benefits since MacDonald was discharged after World War II. Hall also secured an increase in his monthly disability payments from around $110 to $2,471.
"It's a few years later, but I'm happy on behalf of your country to thank you not just with words but with some financial support," Hall said.
