While we wait to hear from Wes Clark - a few memorable quotes:
Wes Clark said -

"I think we're at risk with our democracy. I think we're dealing with the most closed, imperialistic, nastiest administration in living memory. They even put Richard Nixon to shame."

"There are two big legacies we leave to our children: Constitutional government and the environmental itself."

"It was my belief in service that led me to West Point. It was the year after John F. Kennedy admonished us to ask not what our country could do for us, but what we could do for our country....I wanted to be an officer and leader in the Army."

"It is in the best interest of our country to promote stable communities and families. I believe that same-sex couples should not be denied rights to pensions, health insurance, family medical leave. bereavement leave, hospital visitation, survivor benefits and other basic legal protections that all families and children need."

"One of the principles that we operate on in this country is that leaders are held accountable. The simple truth is that we went into Iraq on the basis of some intuition, some fear, some exaggerated rhetoric and some very, very scanty evidence."

13. interesting you should say that
when I was helping out with his Maryland campaign, I got to meet local supporters and also interacted with other supporters on the internet. I was struck by his appeal across the political spectrum. We had far-lefties like Michael Moore and more conservative military types, 20-somethings to senior citizens, just about all ethnic groups, and professions. It was interesting to see the wide diversity of people who were attracted to him. If there's a Dem who can certainly win the WH in '08, it's Clark.

2. a personal observation
i remember meeting him a couple of years ago and I was struck by how approachable, unpretentious, and patient he was. He seemed genuinely interested in meeting people; he was not going through the motions like I've seen with some candidates on C-SPAN. The picture above, with that infectious wide grin (Chester Cheetah would be proud!), just reminded me of that -- . :7

For those of you wondering about that reference to Chester ... Clark loves Cheetos!

3. I miss seeing and hearing him in person.
He gives me hope.

Come on General! We need your voice! As Kris Kirstofferson put it:

"Just when the world is being dragged into the death spiral of an unending cycle of violence by a vision-less, coldblooded collection of think-tank warriors goose-stepping their way into the new millennium with a stunning lack of respect for human rights, the environment, or international law, along comes a man with the proven credentials of intelligence, integrity, and courage singularly equipped by his spirit and experience to lead us out of this mess. Don't listen to what the lying liars say about him; listen to what he says. Wesley Clark is a prayer answered."

4. I look forward to his entry, suspect it's about getting the timing just right
Enter too soon, and you're opened up to all kinds of early gaffes and "the stupid coverage" like certain senators are getting daily. That's a waste of time, money, and braincells.

Enter too late, and everyone's already committed support to another candidate, plus it's hard to get any coverage at all. I think he had his fill of this scenario in 2004.

10. Here's what Wes is doing while we wait

General Clark is on a mission to prevent another tragic and avoidable war, this time between the United States and Iran. He needs all of our help to get the word out about www.stopiranwar.com now while there still is time to stop the war with Iran. This is deadly serious people.

11. Important stuff!
Just looking at Clark's leadership around trying to dissuade Shrub from another foreign policy catastrophe - it sure feels like he is setting the stage to run.

Sure hope so!

Appreciate the link Tom :)

12. Hopefully, sooner then later...
I noticed yesterday that former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle endorsed Obama already. Now I like Obama, so no complaints there; yet with endorsements coming so early, I would not want Wes to miss (or even be late for) the Presidential boat.

I'm guessing if he runs - he will announce within the next couple of weeks.

6. Here are a few more quotes for you......
Edited on Thu Feb-22-07 01:34 AM by FrenchieCat
as he stated on September 26, 2002 to Congress

"The war is unpredictable and could be difficult and costly. And what is at risk in the aftermath is an open-ended American ground commitment in Iraq and an even deeper sense of humiliation in the Arab world, which could intensify our problems in the region and elsewhere."

"we're going to have chaos in that region. We may not get control of all the weapons of mass destruction, technicians, plans, capabilities; in fact, what may happen is that we'll remove a repressive regime and have it replaced with a fundamentalist regime which contributes to the strategic problem rather than helping to solve it."

"Then we're dealing with the longer mid term, the mid term problems. Will Iraq be able to establish a government that holds it together or will it fragment? There are strong factionary forces at work in Iraq and they will continue to be exacerbated by regional tensions in the area. The Shia in the south will be pulled by the Iranians.

The Kurds want their own organization. The Kurds will be hemmed in by the Turks. The Iraqis also, the Iranians also are nervous of the Kurds. But nevertheless, the Kurds have a certain mass and momentum that they've built up. They will have to work to establish their participation in the government or their own identity."

The truth about our past policies and actions as Wes Clark saw it, again on 9/26/02

"We've encouraged Saddam Hussein and supported him as he attacked against Iran in an effort to prevent Iranian destabilization of the Gulf. That came back and bit us when Saddam Hussein then moved against Kuwait. We encouraged the Saudis and the Pakistanis to work with the Afghans and build an army of God, the mujahaddin, to oppose the Soviets in Afghanistan. Now we have released tens of thousands of these Holy warriors, some of whom have turned against us and formed Al Qaida.

My French friends constantly remind me that these are problems that we had a hand in creating. So when it comes to creating another strategy, which is built around the intrusion into the region by U.S. forces, all the warning signs should be flashing. There are unintended consequences when force is used. Use it as a last resort. Use it multilaterally if you can. Use it unilaterally only if you must."

7. In honor of the prosecution of Scooter Libby, a prophetic quote:
October 3, 2003

Going further than his nine rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination, most of whom have called for a special counsel to probe the leak of an undercover CIA officer's name, Clark also demanded an independent commission investigate the "possible manipulation" of intelligence leading to the war in Iraq.

"Nothing could be a more serious violation of public trust than to consciously make a war based on false claims," he told a conference of military reporters and editors. "Its handling of intelligence and its retaliation against its critics may have been criminal."

and wish he would stay on. It has truly been a week of absolutely enjoying that show rather than cringing my way through it.
