4. Great pictures
Nice to see the coverage of the protests against Cheney. Of course, you must go to the foreign press for the coverage.

Anti-war protesters clash with police in Sydney hours before the arrival of US Vice-President Dick Cheney. Picture: Vanessa Hunter

ABOUT 350 anti-Iraq war protesters last night formed a hostile welcome committee for US Vice-President Dick Cheney, clashing with police outside Sydney's Town Hall as they ignored calls for peaceful protests.

12. wow
Seeing that bloodstained American flag really brings home just how badly Bush has damaged our standing in the world. Very sad.

10. I went to the link
for that story. "The Age" is a fairly conservative newspaper in Melbourne. But at least they were reporting on the Sydney demonstrations, unlike in this country.

One thing hit me as strange--the ad on The Age webpage --next to the article about the protestors-- reads

Bush Cheney Shirts and Gear/ Celebrate Bush and American values with our attractive stickers, buttons, t-shirts, mugs and other gear. Perfect gifts for a Bush Christmas. The page links to this:

13. 350? Looks like a lot more than that to me. Thank you, Aussies.
If I lived in Washington DC, I'd organize another group just like it to 'welcome' Cheney back.

<snip>
The Sydney Committee for Welcoming War Criminals is feeling snubbed that the US Vice President Dick Cheney has announced his visit to Sydney without first informing them.

The Committee has learned that the US Vice President will be addressing the Australian American Leadership Dialogue, at an invitation-only event in the ballroom of Sydney's Shangri-La hotel on Friday 23 February 2007.

The Committee has not been invited but undeterred, it will organise a reception for him anyway.

19. So ABC states that 200 anti-war protesters struggled with police, but doesn't
seem to notice all of the 1000's in the street?

Liked the Sydney Committee for Welcoming War Criminals. We should have an American Citizens Welcoming War Criminals present when Darth returns to DC!

24. but they will be in Afghanistan
"Mr Rudd says he expects Mr Cheney to have been thoroughly briefed on the Labor policy of bringing Australian troops home from Iraq.

He will say Labor backs sending more troops to Afghanistan.

This is seen as a key test for the Federal Opposition Leader as he tries to find a balance between showing support for the alliance and Labor's desire to pull troops out of Iraq."

26. I read one report there were a total of 1,500 but they split up
Some of the protesters stood at the line with the cops and small groups did an end around so they could get in closer to Martin Square.

Some got arrested. They had mounted police trying to keep the group from getting to Martin Square, but the protesters went guerilla on the bobbies... or whatever Aussies call their police down under.

I can't find it and hubby is going to come in and turn off the 'puter if I don't come to bed.

Austrailian protestors must be awfully civilized. Here they have helmets, sheilds, rubber bullets, tasers, nightsticks --- and that's before anyone even shows up.........
