Man Is Longtime Friend

POSTED: 7:19 am EST January 13, 2008

NASHUA, N.H. --

A senior adviser to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton was arrested and charged with aggravated drunken driving a day before the New Hampshire primary.

Nashua police said Sidney Blumenthal, a longtime friend and adviser to Bill and Hillary Clinton, was
arrested early Monday morning after an officer pulled over a car traveling 70 mph in a 30 mph zone.

Police said the driver was 59-year-old Blumenthal, a journalist and former White House adviser to
President Bill Clinton now serving as an unpaid senior adviser on Hillary Clinton's campaign.

"I asked if he was here with a campaign. He said he was here with Clinton," Sgt. Mike Masella, one of the arresting officers, told newsweek.com.

Masella said Blumenthal told him he had gotten lost after leaving a restaurant in Manchester, about 20 miles away, while trying to return to his hotel.

Smelling alcohol, officers said they administered a field sobriety test, which Blumenthal failed. Though Blumenthal declined to take a Breathalyzer test, he was arrested on a charge of aggravated drunken driving due to the speed, Masella said.

A handcuffed Blumenthal spent about four hours at a police station before being bailed out Monday morning, Masella said.

Blumenthal will be arraigned later this month.

His lawyer, Raymond Mello of Nashua, did not immediately respond to a message left at his office on Saturday morning. A Clinton campaign spokeswoman was unable to immediately comment on the matter when reached Saturday.

2. Not irrelevent, but old I will agree with.
Drunk driving is no matter to be considered "irrelevant". It's very relevant, it puts lives at risk.

5. This article is on the front page of
thebostonchannel.com . I'm wondering if they sat on the story until after the primary?

6. The only problem I see
is that "news" like this is only the beginning of a long smear campaign. Both Obama and Clinton should run on their achievements and merits. May the best man/woman win. So far, haven't seen much of that from either camp.:eyes:

7. How is it a smear? It's news! He did it and was arrested for it.
That's called Free Press! It is news worthy.

8. Its amazing
the only quote you chose to address was "smear". I think either Obama or Clinton would do alot better if all this trash would be used against their true opponents (anyone on the republican ticket). The only point I tried to make; let's see who the better candidate is according to their respective accomplishments. Isn't that what this is supposed to be about. :bounce: Hey, if you say something nice about my candidate; I'll say something nice about yours. Fair enough.

I hope they both lose and Kucinich wins. If Kucinich, wins the American people win.

10. Crap! I didn't realize this was Sidney Blumenthal.
I sure wish it wasn't. Because not only will Clinton's enemies use this lapse on Sid's part to attack HER, but because he is one of the good guys, one of the few who unfailingly stood by Big Dog through all the troubles.

Rest assured Rush and Tweety and their ilk will soon be banging their drums about this story. Even with his own well-documented problems, Rush is going to make Sidney's drinking the worse substance abuse story since Chappaquidick.

And use it to slime HRC with.

11. Just great
Sigh. I wish HRC would pick her surrogates more carefully. Even if she doesn't win the nomination, this will be used (twisted) to show the kind of supporters all Democrats pick. This doesn't just hurt her, it hurts all of the contenders.

12. It doesn't hurt all Dems at all...he didn't have an under age hooker with him!

Unlike the many transgressions of the rethugs! ;)

I seriously doubt his reckless drunk driving will hurt HRC either.

13. Ummm
This is the party that managed to convince people in Georgia that Max Cleland was the same as Bin Laden and Saddam. Wait! You're right. After all, I am talking about Georgia.

14. The rethugs did that to Max Cleland, not the Dems!
I think someone sat on this story anyway.

I mean, it happened last week and was just now on the front page.

I know there's been more relevant news here since then! :P
