MULBERRY | A former Mulberry High School student called in a false bomb threat to the school Friday morning, hoping to keep his girlfriend, who skipped school that day, from getting in trouble, Mulberry police said.
After a student sent in a tip, police arrested Kelvin Cuevas, 18, of 2673 Sundance Circle in Mulberry and charged him with false report of a bomb concerning state-owned property (school), a third-degree felony. Cuevas later confessed to the crime, police said.
But the scheme did not go as planned. After students were evacuated to the football field about 11 a.m., it took police only about an hour and a half to search the school for the bomb. Students were back in class by about 12:30 p.m., having missed only their lunch breaks, Corp. Brian Kessler said.
"The guy did not coordinate a good time for it," he said.
