Three Kings Day is a traditional Hispanic celebration that honors the biblical story of the three kings who brought baby Jesus gifts of gold, myrrh and frankincense. Many households in Latin countries celebrate by giving children gifts on the Jan. 6 holiday, instead of Dec. 25. Thousands of people flocked to an 18-block stretch of Calle Ocho, or Southwest Eighth Street, to watch the procession between Fourth and 22nd avenues.

Dozens of local leaders and politicians paraded down Calle Ocho, too, many waving and smiling from atop sleek convertibles. A motorcade of Miami police officers on roaring motorcycles cleared the way. Then came the Three Kings, also known as the Wise Men or Magi -- Melchior, Gaspar and Balthasar -- in their flowing purple and gold robes.
Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani rode with Miami-Dade County Commissioners Carlos Gimenez and Rebeca Sosa on an antique firetruck.
His appearance on a firetruck had angered some firefighters in Miami-Dade and New York who criticized his response to 9/11.(snip)
Julio Juarbe said he still celebrates Three Kings Day with his son, Julian, who leaves grass and a big bowl of water under his bed for the Three Kings' camels the night before the holiday. The next morning, the grass and water are gone -- and replaced with presents. Juarbe, who like many others sported a straw hat and sunglasses, said he was content with his first visit to the parade.
