1. On May 15, 2003 the Lieberman campaign proposed one nationally-broadcast,
media-sponsored debate a month.
Following up on the proposal, the DNC coordinated with the campaigns and on
June 27 announced plans for six presidential primary debates including details of four:
-Albuquerque, NM, September 4, 2003 - Hosted by Governor Bill Richardson and members
of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, broadcast by Univision and PBS stations.
-New York City, NY, September 25, 2003 - CNBC/Wall Street Journal debate,
broadcast by CNBC and MSNBC.
-Phoenix, AZ, October 9, 2003 - Hosted by Governor Janet Napolitano and the Arizona
Democratic Party, broadcast on CNN.

-Detroit, MI, October 26, 2003 - Hosted by members of the Congressional Black Caucus.
-Two more debates, to be held in November and December in Iowa and New Hampshire, details tba.
2. Debates provide many opportunities for posturing.
One minor example is this September 14, 2003 exchange of letters.
3. Not all debates that are proposed happen.
-The Congressional Black Caucus initially proposed four debates to be held in
Baltimore, MD; Detroit, MI; Los Angeles, CA; and Jackson, MS.
-In New Hampshire, The Union Leader and WMUR proposed four forums: town hall meetings
in September and October 2003 and formal debates in December 2003 and January 2004.
-A Presidential Primary Debate to be hosted by NHPTV, NECN and the Concord Monitor,
at the Johnson Theatre, University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH
on Thursday, January 8, 2004 was cancelled in Dec. 2003.
