9. It's A TV Show...First And Foremost

Look at how these things are promoted...the candidates always take a back seat to the network and their "stars". GE/NBC gives us Williams and Russert, CNN has Wolfie and Sweet Table Candy Crowley, ABC with Gibson and CBS (who blew their debate thanks to the WPA strike) with Shieffer and Couric. These networks see this as their show...the candidates are mere props to try to "light up"...the more "heated" the debate, the "sexier" it is. Their worst nightmare is a real debate...High School Forensic rules...where the moderator just throws out a simple question and the candidates have at it...the next thing they yell is "time".

The saving grace is that more and more people are rejecting the news as reality show game...the pundit class has almost no credibility and the outrage is working against the corporate media, not in its favor. Last night's debate...when you paid attention only to the candidates and no attention to the baiting by Russert and Williams was worth watching, the rest was white noise.
