Should Al Gore win the Nobel Peace Prize?
Or is the Nobel just showy politicized symbolism?

OSLO, Norway --Former vice president and environmental advocate Al Gore is believed to be among 181 nominees for the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

In releasing the final count Thursday, awards committee secretary Geir Lundestad would only give a total number -- 135 individuals and 46 organizations -- without listing any names, in keeping with the prize rules.

The five-member awards committee keeps its list of candidates secret for 50 years, and refuses to indicate who might be under consideration. However, those making nominations sometimes announce them.

This year, those include Gore, for campaigning to draw attention to the threat of global warming, Irena Sendler, a Polish woman who saved the lives of Jewish children during World War II, and American TV host Oprah Winfrey.

Other announced nominees include Canadian Intuit environmentalist Sheila Watt-Cloutier, Bolivian President Evo Morales and U.N. AIDS envoy to Africa Stephen Lewis.

1. Unlike the hard-science prizes...
The Peace Prize is always pushing some agenda or other. After Kissinger got it, it's hard to take it seriously. And though I've written in half-support of a Gore bid for the Prez, no way should this ever go to him. Not after Kosovo.

BTW, the Economics prize is the real scam - it's not an original Nobel, it was added by the Bank of Sweden to legitimate that particular land-of-make-believe discipline as a "science."

5. Not after Kosovo???
Funny, I thought actually stopping genocide and incarcerating the correct villain was a good thing.

2. No
This is not to discount the important work Gore has done on global warming but some of the other nominees are far more deserving.

9. I'd like to see Sendler get it
Her work in saving children from occupied Poland is amazing and took incredible personal bravery. Plus, she's in her mid-nineties. Al Gore will probably still be alive next year, Sendler might well not be.

Again, this is not to discount the work Gore has done or that he deserves the prize, I just think others are more deserving.

3. He is a legitimate candidate with real-world reputation and results.
Very interesting:

"The five-member awards committee keeps its list of candidates secret for 50 years, and refuses to indicate who might be under consideration. However, those making nominations sometimes announce them."

(by the way, I think the word is "Inuit" - one 't').

Why not Gore? He has been on the issue for 3 decades and is obviously tireless in his pursuit of the truth and the solution. On the other hand, if one is to reach into top-tier public figures for the prize, Bill and Melinda Gates are also deserving of such an honor.

4. Nothing threatens long term peace on the planet as much as the climate
changes brought on by the ever increasing use of fossil fuels. Why not recognize one of the leading political figures advocating that we do something about it before it's too late?

i think running against a nobel laureate might be an uphill slog for the GOP's designated puppet.

13.  I think he should win and split the prize with Sheila Watt-Cloutier
It would be tremendous to see both of them accepting it together because of his work regarding this crisis on a global scale, and her work regarding the Inuit people which MUST be heard by more people.
