(1) To shank or to stab. Why did they have to come up with a replacement word for stabbing? I still don't understand the etymological reasoning behind shanking.

(2) What is up with that commercial that ends, "today we will take callers with last names from A-M, tomorrow, all others can call." I mean, WTF? Who would be stupid enough to fall for that ploy?
