huck: We Need To Amend The Constitution, Bring It In Line With God
Edited on Wed Jan-16-08 06:10 AM by Philosoraptor
http://tpmelectioncentral.com/2008/01/huck_we_need_to_amend_the_constitution_bring_it_in_line_with_god.php

At a Michigan campaign event last night, Mike Huckabee gave an interesting reason for why he wants to amend the Constitution to ban both abortion and gay marriage: Otherwise, the Constitution would be in conflict with God.

Huckabee first observed that some of his opponents don't want to amend the Constitution on both of these topics. "But I believe it's a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living God," Huckabee said. "And that's what we need to do, is to amend the Constitution so it's in God's standards rather than try to change God's standards."

Is this fucker a mere annoyance, or an actual threat to democracy?

1. Both...
...since to ascribe to this would be (but not limited to):

1. Allowing this guy to decide for you whether of not "God" exists,

2. Allowing this guy to define what "the living God" means, and what that being requires of you,

3. A definite and un-camouflaged statement of intent to disregard the First Amendment, and Article VI, Section 3, of the Constitution of the United States of America; as well as the stated intent of the majority of the Founders, as determined from their writings.

Oh, yeah...he is also an annoyance...and his fellow-travelers want to strip you of one of the most fundamental rights that accompany being human...freedom of conscience regarding metaphysical issues.

:hi:

4. I would be happy simply to have a firm, unassailable...
separation of Church and State...and a SCOTUS that felt the same way...

2. He's a threat to democracy
but only if he gets elected.

If our "friends" the neocons are as scared of him as we are, no worries...so long as they can Rove him into place.

5. Huckabee's attitude is why...
I view the future make-up of the SCOTUS as one of, if not the, critical issue(s) to be decided by this election.

6. Is This Not What The Government Of Iran Is All About?
.
To borrow a line from the super duper great movie, "Highlander," - "It is better to flame out than to fade away."

Let us hope the GOP actually nominate Huckabee. I am just enough of a believer in the people of USA, to think that most of the people like USA as a non-religious country. People seem to believe in the freedoms in the Constitution as it stands today.

The flame out of the GOP will be complete when they bow before Huckabee.

8. With those words, Huckabee did a swan dive onto the dung heap of history
He should have just burned his Presidential aspirations, it would have come to the same conclusion.

9. Which God?
One of the founding tenets of our country is Freedom of Religion - we are free to follow any religion we want.

so which religion, which god?

sidenote: seems to me the huckster is proposing is overthrowing our democratic republic in favor of a theocracy.

10. Why not put the ten Commandments in the Constitution first?
I am the Lord your God, you shall have no other gods before me
You shall not make for yourself an idol
You shall not make wrongful use of the name of your God
Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy
Honor your Father and Mother
You shall not murder*
You shall not commit adultery**
You shall not steal***
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor****
You shall not covet your neighbor's house or your neighbor's wife*****

Of course there would have to be asterisks after the last five, otherwise there would be no Republicans.

*Unless you are in a war or you need to kill off your political opponent.
**Unless you get a divorce or plan to get a divorce or if it involves children.
***Unless you take a bribe or steal votes.
****Unless it is to protect you leader.
*****Unless it motivates you to acquire huge sums of money and buy off your neighbor.

11. How can a thing not be "in line with God"?
Edited on Wed Jan-16-08 06:58 AM by Leopolds Ghost
Talk about a koan-ic question.

On Edit: Assuming an omnipresent Creator God, all things were created by and suffered to exist by God, whether they are good or not. Perhaps Huck means "the Constitution is not in keeping with what is Good" i.e. God's universal preferences. But what is good is a preferential ideal, not a state of constant existence, and so cannot possibly apply to a legal text
(of changing interpretive value), not to mention the fact that all laws are based on the threat of force i.e. gang rule and therefore ungodly to begin with.

Edited on Wed Jan-16-08 07:04 AM by Leopolds Ghost
Whom the Levites, in their casuistry and quest to extend the simple 10 Commandments into an entire constellation of Draconian and Jacobin measures, much like the Taliban, may have deemed witches.

17. OK, but we've got to start taxing the churches. If they want to play, they'll have to pay.
Edited on Wed Jan-16-08 06:58 AM by Perry Logan
The good news is that most churches would probably go out of business IMMEDIATELY if we started taxing them.

23. Obviously, the Huckster's idea of God is his own reflection
in the mirror. . .besides being a heterosupremacist, he obviously has no problem "amending" the Constitution to remove basic rights from American citizens who aren't practicing Southern Baptists.

This lines right up with dominionist ideas that American was founded upon "Christian" principles. . .though they never cite the Bible verses referring to a President and an elected representative government. Now why is that?

29. Americans may be passive, dopey, brainwashed even. However....
Things are changing. You can sense it all over now...people are waking up, are fed up and disgusted. If the Christo-fascists pulled another major election theft there would def be pockets of rebellion/insurrection. Even though they own the media they wouldn't be able to spin that in any remotely effective way ... well, provided enough people fought back.

27. A common delusion among crazed fundamentalists....
Unfortunately, the Constitution and the Ten Commandments are not the same document, sister documents or, at least in the case of the Constitution, written by the hand of God. Sorry Huckleberry, good try and all that, but when you drag a sack of rocks on-stage at the next debate and start chucking them at Rudy, we'll start taking you seriously. Honest.

28. It's Funny To See The GOOPers Squirm On Their Own Hypocrisy
For years the fundies like Hucklenutz were hidden away. They would speak their codespeak in the churches and on the religious radio stations and no one noticed. The party embraced the Ralph Reeds and Robertsons and Falwells who knew their place...keep the church buses loaded on election day and they all go to the bank. Oh how the worm has turned, and that worm probably is best name "Schaivo". If you want to trace the start of the fundie revolt look right there. They were expecting the GOOP to fall all over itself to keep this poor woman alive...and at first they did...then the general public spoke up and this included a lot of "fiscal" conservatives who didn't want some faith heeler determine if they should live or die. The rift has only grown wider since.

The weak GOOP field is making things a lot sharper. With Rudy and Thompson now total bust-outs, Mittens and McCain are turning out to be the "great white hopes" here...dividing the non fundie base while Hucklenutz uses every gimick he can to consolidate his vote. He's tapped into the fundie grassroots and it'll be interesting to see how these people react if the Huckster fails to grab the nomination. Will they force him as the VP? Either way...he'll be electoral poison and the "mainstream" GOOPers know it.

If there's any "incentive" Democrats should take from this outrageous violation of the separation of church and state is how important it is to elect Deomcratic majorities to as many state houses as possible to prevent any attempt to use the Constitution as a weapon not a protector.
