Why not $8000 and $16,000 for everyone?
Just borrow a little more from China and Japan and lets do this thing up right if were going to do it. $1600 bucks isn't going to do nothing. If we can piss away billions of dollars on mercenaries in Iraq we can certainly give some real money to ourselves. Can't we?

5. Or...
Every family that earns LESS than 150K gets a one time $20K..UN TAXED..

Imagine the freedom that would come with that money..That would pay OFF many a credit card and would buy some cars & make some down payments on houses, or allow some people to MOVE to where they dcould find a better standard of living..

7. Imagine if they gave that much towards homeowners...
the $8,000 to $16,000 that is, as an incentive to install solar panels or other alt-fuel sources, to their homes. Now, imagine if they had done that before going to war. It always boggles my mind how badly these guys have fucked up.

8. It would be almost as bad,
because the money spent on the attack, invasion and occupation of Iraq was borrowed money.

It doesn´t help much to invest with borrowed money anyway.

10. For around ten grand
I could put enough solar power on our house that I'd never pay another electric bill and run the air conditioners at full blast all summer, but that makes too much sense.

11. Just fixing up their homes with new windows and doors would have been huge
I did do that about five years ago and it has paid me back in spades. And that was when natural gas and electricity was relatively cheap. Sure glad I did it when I did.

Or if people could afford a new fuel efficient car, that would help a lot.

$600 isn't going to change nothing for me. I give my kids bigger Christmas presents than that.

You want to get the economy stimulated? How about getting those fucking corporations like Exxon and Tyco and so on to cough up some of their obscene profits and give it back to their employees.

34. More fun with math.
Exxon had a $36B profit posted in 2005.

Divide that $36B by the 150,000,000 people eligible for a rebate.

$240 measly bucks. However, it wouldn't cost the taxpayer a dime.

25. And think of what we could have done with the $600 or more billion we've 'spent' on Iraq occupation.
A year or so ago, I was thinking if the money had been divided between the the states, with each one getting $10 billion, what could have been done. In my small state, it would have completely covered the budget for 5 years. Now Arkansas gets most of its revenue from individuals with 49% coming from sales and use taxes, 40% from personal income taxes, 3% from tobacco, and a mere 5% from corporate income (and Wal-Mart is headquartered here!). Or they could have given $4000 to every man, woman, and child in the state.

35. Thats what I have been saying
Edited on Sun Jan-20-08 10:08 AM by NNN0LHI
Why do we let Bush decide how much we get? Because he is the decider? I have read the estimates that the Iraq fiasco has already cost every American $20,000, plus the huge spike in gas prices we got out of it that is killing us every day.

I say we shoot for the moon on this one. We may never get another chance like this ever again.

Dems should turn this into a huge campaign issue. Let the Retugs vote against a huge rebate for every American family and see where that gets them in November.

37. That's not a bad idea
$800/$1600 is a waste of time. But $8k or $16k could really help people. I'd use it to pay off my remaining student loan, and then I even might spend a grand or so (on Chinese computer parts... hah) after that.

Now we just need to stop the war to pay for it.
