in olden times, some devotees were so idiotic they thought they should 'pluck out' their eye when they looked too hard at a pretty woman, others castrated themselves and fasted so much their systems gave out, so the church condemned all mis interpreting of scripture (this was actually one of the reasons the papists, or the roman catholics, generally reserved the bible to the ordained, a great complaint of the 'protest-ants' under Luther etc)
