Supercell thunderstorms will likely initiate from north central Texas, through western Oklahoma, into south central Kansas Friday evening, and track eastward overnight. These thunderstorms will bring a threat for tornadoes and very large hail across the southern Plains, impacting areas from Wichita to Oklahoma City to Dallas.
Overnight Friday, into Saturday, thunderstorms will likely evolve into a squall line, tracking into eastern Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, and southern Missouri. These thunderstorms will bring a threat for widespread damaging winds, hail, and isolated tornadoes across the Lower Mississippi Valley, impacting areas from Columbia and Memphis, through Little Rock, Shreveport, and Jackson.
Across the north central Plains and Upper Midwest, a major winter storm will begin to evolve, as a wintry mix and light snow will initially develop over parts northern Iowa and Minnesota Friday night, and quickly become more widespread on Saturday.
Heavy snow will impact areas from central Nebraska, into eastern South Dakota, and across much of Minnesota and northern Wisconsin. Areas including North Platte, Sioux Falls, and Minneapolis could see a foot of more of snow, along with gusty winds creating blizzard conditions.
From central and eastern Iowa, across southern Wisconsin, and northern Illinois, a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain could result in significant ice accumulations. This would impact areas from Des Moines, through Madison, to Chicago.
In addition, these same areas could see heavy rain, as well as areas from Kansas City, into Springfield and St. Louis. This heavy rain potential combined with either an existing snow pack or a saturated ground, will increase the potential for flooding, and perhaps significant river flooding through the weekend.
This evolving winter storm will continue to impact the Upper Midwest, Midwest, Great Lakes, and spread into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast Sunday. Showers and thunderstorms will advance across the southern states as well.
All persons from the central plains, to the Great Lakes, to the east coast should monitor the progress of this storm system through the weekend.
