Are those of you who wish to shorten Republican to Republic (to get back at those mean Republicans) just out to show them we are as illiterate as they. I think it is childish and represents ignorance. We should be able to use proper english or others can and will discredit us as we do them...just my $.02 worth

6. My personal preference is NeoCON, or CON.
IMO, the only ones who deserve to be called Republican are the ones who have enough guts to speak their own minds, apart from the NeoCON agenda.

8. Republican is also an adjective.
Hence, the confusion. They have one word for both the noun and adjective. The Democrats have two.

13. They should have two as well. We shall not be contained by convention.

It's language. If enough people want it to change, it will change.

9. Ah, sorry, but "Republican" is also an adjective.
As in "Republican ideals," which creates an oxymoron, or oxymoran if you prefer. :P

15. Indeed, Will. As in "Republican Party."
I can't get worked up over the so-called slight of calling our organization the "Democrat Party". There's no negative connotation, and it is simply butchery of the language by people who should be educated enough to know better.

21. It's not actually butchery; it's normal usage
See, for instance, http://english-zone.com/grammar/adjective3.html

or

Ming Campbell elected Liberal Democrat leader

...

The task now, he said, is to build a strong effective Liberal Democrat party to fight for a greener, fairer, decent Britain at peace with itself at home and admired abroad.

However, "Democratic Party" is the official name of the party, and so should not be rephrased by anyone who feels like it. But "The Democrat Speaker of the House" would be OK.

12. A proper noun or an adjective?
I consider Democratic in the name of the Democratic Party to be a proper noun as part of the title given to the party. If it was an adjective it would be 'small d' democratic as a description of the noun Party. As it is Democratic Party is a specific proper name.

If you were named Joe Jones 'Joe' is not an adjective.

14. peaches is right
Democratic as in the Democratic Party is a proper noun, whereas small "d" democratic is an adjective.

17. It's a part of a proper noun. You don't refer to the Dem Party as...
..."the Democratic," do you? So it's not a proper noun in and of itself. It's an adjective in a proper noun.

NGU.
