I have a dream too - but I woke up to a nightmare (with apologies to the wonderful MLK)
Edited on Sun Jan-20-08 06:06 PM by The Straight Story
I had a dream that in this country all people, who were created equal - were treated equal.

That those who needed any type of health care got it, without worrying about their income or social status. That I could call a neuro-surgeon and get in to see one for the wife. That if my daughter was ill I could just go and see someone and get her the meds she needs.

I dreamed that two people could marry each other and spend a life together, no matter if they were both the same sex or not.

I dreamed of a century where our country was not in some war or another, and young folks were not dying for the cause of the rich but instead for the cause of defense.

I dreamed that we spent more of our collective money to make this a better place for ALL people, and not just the few. That we cared about the homeless, the poor, the sick, the elderly and so on.

I dreamed that my daughters did not grow up in a country filled with sexism, or racism. That they could just be themselves and not objects.

I dreamed of a land where we took care of the environment, national parks, and where science was funded to help us all.

And then I woke up.

To the nightmare.

I am sorry my children that I have not left you a better country, but I have not caved yet. We don't win by running and hiding, we win by fighting until our final day for that which we believe in.

We have not lost until we give up. And as long as I am alive, giving up is not something I intend to do.

4. Well said!
I share the dream with you and MLK. But the nightmare is still ever-present. But MLK inspires us to never give up on the fight!

6. speaking of dreams: The conclusion of Bellamy
"All thoughtful men agree that the present aspect of society is portentous of great changes. The only question is, whether they will be for the better or the worse. Those who believe in man's essential nobleness lean to the former view, those who believe in his essential baseness to the latter. For my part, I hold to the former opinion. 'Looking Backward' was written in the belief that the Golden Age lies before us and not behind us, and is not far away. Our children will surely see it, and we, too, who are already men and women if we deserve it by our faith and by our works."

Yet, 100 years later we seem further away than ever. Worse yet, not even inspired to try.

8. kinda wonder if WWI and WWII, the holocaust, the Soviet gulag
have they proven that "those who believe in man's essential baseness" were correct?
