going to be so hard this year to put the time into it that it deserves.

2. he also said, sat to listen to kerry and two minutes..... so he is saying on national tv
he needs to be entertained with short funny sound bites to be able to vote on a candidate and to actually have to listen to a person tell ideas, that may be dry yet kick ass and do able.... is toooooo much for him to do in looking at who to vote for

said a lot about the man in that very simple sentence and something that had me flabbergasted last election the number of people that could not listen to kerry for 20 minutes of their life to know what the man had to say because they had such poor attention abilities.

Funny as he is, it doesn't surprise me that he'd be less than thrilled about a woman being our leading candidate.

6. That's absolute bullshit. I've known Lew for 20 years.
He's a total sweetheart, and while I've never dated him, I truly adore him. I know him well and many of his friends and first met him around 1986. I've seen his shows when he was not known, appeared in shows with him, gone out, hung out, and he is the best. And I know his ex and I really doubt your story.

11. I can't tell you that. I shouldn't have posted it. Sorry.
Maybe he behaves differently when having a relationship with a woman than with friends. She said he wasn't a very nice person, and wasn't very nice to her. My friend is also about the sweetest, kindest woman I ever met working in entertainment. I don't care if you don't believe me. I shouldn't even have posted it here. But I do sense from his comedy that he doesn't like Hillary very much....and combined with what my friend said, makes me wonder if he has a bit of a problem with women.

Sorry if I've offended you. Of course I haven't known him well myself, and not for 20 years. Maybe it was just a bad relationship.

I paid 60.00 a ticket to see him at UCLA benefitting the Writers Strike and he didn't show up. My kids were really disappointed.

68. My Husband & I Love Him
We were in Vegas over the summer and were pleasantly surprised to see that he was performing in the hotel on the night we got there. We caught his show at the MGM Grand and thought he was hilarious! I especially loved it when he started going off on GWB and the Iraq "war", the audience was loving it, but a young blond couple got offended, got up, walked out and he made a joke about offending them as they left. The audience laughed at them on their way out. Brilliant.

15. It has to do with ALL Democratic candidates.
It was from his "Red, White and Screwed" concert that was first broadcast last year on HBO. This person obviously just discovered it in its HEAVILY CENSORED form on Comedy Central.

That was before Hillary Clinton was even a wet dream for John McCain. Before Barack Obama was placed on Rush Limbaugh's dartboard.

Lewis is talking about every Democrat who ever bent over a dumpster for the pleasure of a Republican. And that includes, ladies and gentlemen, most of the elected Democrats in both houses of Congress.

Lewis Black: Red, White, and Screwed/ Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List
By John Leonard
Published Jun 4, 2006

Onstage at the Warner Theater in Washington, D.C. (because the Kennedy Center refused to condone his road-rage overuse of fuck), Lewis Black is exasperated into ulcers by practically everything. This includes George Bush and the war in Iraq; Democrats who couldn’t find anybody better than John Kerry to run against Bush (“Like finding a normal person who would lose in the Special Olympics”); Dick Cheney; former fema-ite Michael Brown; opponents of gay marriage and evolution; and his own Old Testament God, Whom he calls “a prick.” Black does all this in a suit and tie, middle-aged enough to point to his eightysomething parents in the audience and call them “salt and pepper shakers.” Having grown up on Lenny Bruce and Mort Sahl, I’m still waiting for a 21st-century stand-up Toxic Avenger. But compared with Kathy Griffin, Black is Jonathan Swift.

34. Are you a comedy writer? You should be!
June 2006. She announced in 2007, well after people were talking about her running.

I've seen his show. He wasn't just talking about Kerry losing, he was saying we can't win an election because we didn't have anyone in the wings who looked liked a good candidate.

I don't hate Lewis Black. I do think he has a bit of a problem with women, based on what my friend told me, and some of his jokes.

I shouldn't have said he was a jerk, so sorry for that.

I reacted thinking about her (my friend).

Whatever she may or may not have said, she was wrong. I know him, I've known him for years, there are people here at DU who have known ME for years and will vouch for my word. I know that there are often two sides when a relationship breaks up, but your brand of gossip is extremely unfair. And the fact that you are tying it to HRC's candidacy is evidence IMO that you are makihg shit up.

I'm not making anything up. I believe you feel he's a good friend. I don't know why you'd just say my friend was wrong. It's her experience and perspective.

a handful of friends from high school can't get into various colleges so they start their own (so their parents don't kill them about not getting into college--they start this scam, rent an abandoned mental hospital, and start this bullshit college. only problem--other kids see it online, apply, the computer says they are all accepted and hundreds of kids show up for orientation.)

lewis black plays the part of a guy who is hired to act as a principle & teacher and he has some really fun moments in this.

kind of makes me think it is this generation's animal house. i've watched it repeatedly -- i love it.

I've watched his show with my sons many times, and I never took his remarks to be just about Kerry. I had my own take and opinion, however incorrect you think it is or it may be.

You haven't considered for a moment that I reacted like I did because he did hurt my friend.

Then you post three replies to my single post, talking about namecalling, etc, when all I did was correct your mistaken assumptions.

You are suffering some kind of paranoia where every sentiment you hear and don't like comes from the amorphous "them." Then you lump in whomever you want to with your "them."

Also, Lewis Black is a comedian--in other words, he tells jokes. If you don't like his jokes, don't pay him any attention.

Last bit of advice--see a doctor.

14. Lewis Black ain't no Mort Sahl...
"A conservative is someone who believes in reform. But not now."

"Liberals feel unworthy of their possessions. Conservatives feel they deserve everything they've stolen."

"My life needs editing."

"People tell me there are a lot of guys like me, which doesn't explain why I'm lonely."

"Reagan won because he ran against Jimmy Carter. If he ran unopposed he would have lost."

"Washington couldn't tell a lie, Nixon couldn't tell the truth, and Reagan couldn't tell the difference.

"Conservatives are not necessarily stupid, but most stupid people are conservatives."

"The trouble with radicals is that they only read radical literature, and the trouble with conservatives is that they don't read anything."

"The media are only as liberal as the conservative businesses that own them."

"A conservative is a man with two perfectly good legs who, however, has never learned how to walk forward."

"President Bush is supporting Arnold but a lot of Republicans are not, because he is actually quite liberal. Karl Rove said if his father wasn't a Nazi, he wouldn't have any credibility with conservatives at all."

"A conservative is a man who is too cowardly to fight and too fat to run."

Mort Sahl

16. Thank God. Mort Sahl was a yawning bore.
He was unable to talk to anyone who wasn't reading Commentary, Dissent, or their joint publication Disenttary.

I seriously tried to watch his comedy dozens of times. I tried to find humor in his written stuff. In comedy, your mileage will always vary, but with Sahl, I never got out of the garage.

18. never thought of him so much as 'a comedian', he was a satirist, there's a difference...
Edited on Mon Jan-21-08 12:06 AM by bridgit
whether you personally ever made it out of the garage is another matter, Sahl paved the way for many to follow http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mort_Sahl look, i've lived with stand up comics and comedy writers, some venues love the screaming, angsty, arm waving stuff...others do not. welcome to: The Performing Arts

38. Lewis Black is entertaining
Edited on Mon Jan-21-08 01:23 AM by fujiyama
but I don't take his political commentary seriously. His nature of cynicism is great for some laughs, but extending it any further is lazy. Bush had many advantages as a war time incumbent and with his henchmen ran one of the nastiest smear campaigns in US political history.

I am glad to see someone disputing Lew's contentions on the merits instead of on spurious bs.

67. I like Lewis.
But this dumb fuck needs to look at the national polls. Our candidates beat their candidates, on all levels. He acts as if we have a weak field.

70. What candidates are you talking about?
Again (I sigh from exasperation) he did this show last year!

At that time, the Fembot, the Student Council Candidate, John Edwards Does Not Exist, and Dennis Kucinich Even More Does Not Exist weren't even candidates then.

I haven't heard him talk about the next Democrats to blow the run for the White House, but I'm looking forward to it. And don't doubt it; the DLC has managed to pull defeat from the jaws of victory in Presidential and Congressional elections for quite some time now.

71. It could happen twice if the People don't catch on to how it happened the first time!
If we do not go into Nov. 2008 with a truth perspective on the Bush years and how the Executive IS a Junta,
the overthrow will not be undone as provided by a string of words, The Constitution providing free elections.

First, it is only a free election if the electorate has all the facts, and is actually FREE to form opinions based on the TRUTH!
That hurdle is our first priority as a society, or the others may not matter.

Second, it is only a free election if votes do count, and count as cast.
If they do not, the first hurdle, Will of the People, can be overthrown!

It would have been nice if one of you would have championed the truth in this.
