Just back from hearing all 3 candidates
We had a good size crowd at the King Day at the Statehouse NAACP rally here in Columbia SC. Crowd was about 80% black. Obama, Edwards and Clinton all gave short but very spirited speeches. Obama was clearly the crowd favorite. I didn't see much evidence of black support for Clinton; most of her cheers seemed to come from the mostly female whites in the audience. I'll get to hear them all again on Friday evening at a 'hot dogs and politics' rally being put on by the SC Democratic Party. I think the situation is still very fluid, but I'm hearing more and more of the white Democrats I know deciding in favor of Obama.
Being South Carolina, we of course had the usual contingent of a dozen jackasses with their confederate flags. The head of the state NAACP spoke directly to them for about 10 minutes concerning the flag's heritage of bigotry and hate. Don't think he got through to them; one was holding a sign that said "The NAACP is a terrorist organization" and another equated removing the flag from the state house grounds with treason. Unfortunately, they will probably get as much coverage on the news tonight as the rally.

1. "All 3?"
Apparently, it isn't only Texas, NBC, and CNN who have decided to exclude my candidate from the race.

Those three are the only ones who will get one percent, or more, of the vote.
And that's just the truth.

anyone who speaks the truth is being totally ignored or sidelined. Sickening.

7. well received
They all had a polite reception and applause. Edwards may have given the most emotional speech. And, for the first poster, 'all 3' was a reference that they were the only three candidates present.

6. The idiots with the
confederate flags and the racist signs aren't going to vote for the Democrat no matter who it is. No getting through to them because they don't want to change their racist beliefs. They are low lifes and their beliefs give them a group of people they think they are superior to.

No matter. They are still at the bottom of the social food chain IMHO.

13. you're welcome
They mentioned my Dad today. There's a bill to remove the statue of Pitchfork Ben Tillman from the statehouse. He was governor at the turn of the century and head of a militia that actively advocated the murder of any blacks attempting to vote. He also passed the 1890 constitution (which we still have) that institutionalized Jim Crow. The head of the state NAACP said that if we were to begin removing statues of all the racists, we wouldn't have many left. He particularly pointed out John C Calhoun and Strom Thurmond. By the way, I've met Strom's mixed race granddaughter. She runs a community service agency in a poor rural area near Columbia. She's very impressive.
(for anyone wondering about the Strom Jr line, Catwoman once nicknamed me Son of Strom)

21. I was wondering
More because a friend of mine actually went to school with Strom, Jr. (by a complete fluke of school zoning maps). His report was that Jr. had little in common with his father (I think Mrs. Strom had been living apart from the old geezer since Jr. was a baby). On the other hand, Dan Quayle's kid was a complete ass.

31. from what I've heard
from several people who went to Law School with him was that he was a decent guy. He was the youngest US Attorney in history when Bush appointed him several years ago. A lot of people raised hell about him not being qualified, but apparently having the name Thurmond at the top of the resume was all that was needed.

12. I'm amazed at how you, an apparent crowd participant, can tell
the difference from a few white females cheering from black supporters in a crowd? Were the white females in a segregated corner?

" Clinton; most of her cheers seemed to come from the mostly female whites in the audience"

This is purely an all out racist remark as well.

"I didn't see much evidence of black support for Clinton"

This post reeks of racism. You identify the NAACP addressing the confederate flag carriers as jack-assess with bigotry and hatred but I sense you have your share of bigotry to address yourself by your statements of assumption.

16. you are simply nuts
There was a large area of people holding Clinton signs, and they were mostly female. The majority of Clinton signs was in that one area. You must be brilliant to be able to diagnose racism from far away when you weren't even at the event. Watch the news tonight and you'll see.

23. Just take a serious look at how you
Edited on Mon Jan-21-08 02:12 PM by liberalnurse
make such broad based assumptions .........only blacks support a black man and only a few white women support a white woman. This based on the attendance of a large, outdoors crowd of mixed races; presumably, not practicing group segregation for the event....

Well, maybe there is an except in your mind that is, of racism.
