MSNBC's Contessa Brewer: "It's the most depressing day of the year."
While introducing MSNBC political director Chuck Todd, Contessa Brewer was recapping the weekend. In describing John McCain's victory in South Carolina on Saturday, she mispronounced the word "Saturday." When she cut to Todd, she said, "Sometimes you just can't pronounce the word 'Saturday.'"

Todd: Well, it's a Monday holiday.

Brewer: That's true. It's the most depressing day of the year.

1. Why would she say that?
Isn't she honoring MLK today?

2. I don't know why she said it. It was an odd statement.

3. No, that would have been yesterday...
...Jan 20th, the anniversary of both of George W. Bush's inaguarations.

Except now we only have less than a year to go, so it might as well be a holiday.

4. I heard about this phenomenon earlier......
The third Monday in January is known to be the most depressing day of the year due to bad weather, lack of sunlight, and Christmas credit card bills coming due. I guess the other most depressing day is the Monday prior to Thanksgiving. Psychological dribble, to be sure. But, I believe that is what prompted her to say such a thing.

5. I heard that on the news today too.
I heard a mention of today being the most depressing day of the year on the news earlier today. It has to do with many people realizing they haven't kept their New Year's resolutions, being cold and deary weather, Christmas bills starting to come in. Things like that.

6. Why? Because she's a Packer fan!!!!
They lost, the entire state of Wisconsin is in a major funk today. I won't be able to call my mother for a couple days.

She was a reporter in Milwaukee before her current job. So of course she's depressed today.

Don't read too much into it. It's just an honest statement representative of the ambient mood.
