but who is Ava, and why do I not see an Ava on the page you liked us to?

I really hate posts that coyly don't give very much information.

(This is my third time mentioning that.)

I wasn't trying to be "coy," the link was for people who may not be familiar with Mother Jones magazine.

16. Then why post a link that doesn't enlighten anyone
who doesn't already know what you are talking about?

Since I don't subscribe to MJ, could you tell me who Ava actually is and what her connection to the current MJ issue actually is? I might, given that information, consider it worthwhile to go off an purchase the magazine.

who started this site

http://www.peacetakescourage.com/page-home.htm

She's been featured on national magazines and TV.

She's a real decent kid who's contributed much to the peace movement. Check out her site and forum and see what she's about.

25. Ava is from a small town in Alabama
She is home schooled by her parents, who are both attorneys. She has appeared on CNN and other networks. I've heard some of her radio interviews here in Alabama. On one show she mentioned attending Auburn University and later make a career in the film industry. On the down side, republicans have sent her thousands of vicious emails.

35. You must be so proud to have her in your lovely state, Elwood -
and I mean lovely state - my daughter is a grad student at UAB, and I've gotten to visit. The people are gracious, the food is wonderful, the motorcyle-riding roads (twisties) are terrific, and despite the politics, I really enjoy it.

And having you and Ava and so many other Alabama DU'er's will change the politics, slowly but surely!

39. If we could only export the brainwashed southern baptists....
My two sisters married southern baptists, and now they're official Bushitler worshipers. My 88-year-old mother and I are still dems. One of my sisters has not been very successful brainwashing her three children. They all voted for Kerry in 2004, and she threw a fit.

Ava did an excellent job on the last interview I heard. There were two hosts, one democrat and one republican, and they were very fair and respectful. They gave her the full 30 minutes and were never rude like Hannity or Limbaugh. It was very civil.

40. Goodness, Elwood, export 'em all -
you'd have, what, 352 folks left in the state? :P -

Actually, export 'em to Iraq. THAT would prove interesting, at the very least!

Ava has such poise for someone her age. It never ceases to amaze me that some adults think a person's age is fair ground for nastiness in an interview. But Ava gives as good as she gets - politely, intelligently, and with a few zingers I wish I'd thought of....

Do you remember the show she was interviewed for? I'd like to see if I could find a video. I know a lot of the Alabama stations, if it was local. :pals:

34. www.peacetakescourage.com
Ava's site, developed solely by her. She's gotten everything from praise to death threats - not an easy accomplishment for one who developed the site at 15. Ava has been a DU member since 2006, with well over 5000 posts. She's very, very special to all of us who have the privilege of knowing her!!

Lots of articles in Mother Jones are not online, but are strictly in the magazine. Glad I'm a long time subscriber!

Yeah, I noticed the Mother Jones magazine while at work at the Post Office the other day and saw the caption something along the lines of "student blogger" and I knew that it was Ava.

Well, I didn't technically read the article, but I did PERUSE the article and sure enough, it was her.

38. She's also featured on a new magazine called The Progressive Christian
HOWEVER,
PLEASE NOTE: To read this article, you will have to sign in as a visitor and give your e-mail address:
http://www.tpcmagazine.org/article.php?ID=14

(snip)
The face of courage is young and vibrant, with keen intellect and passion gleaming out of green eyes framed by curly brown hair.

The face belongs to 16-year-old Ava Lowery, a self-described “Protestant Christian” with a web site that has shaken the towers of the mighty.

Ava’s web site, www.peacetakescourage.com, began in 2004 as the blog of a precocious 14-year-old girl who couldn’t, and wouldn’t, reconcile the U.S. war in Iraq with the Christian faith she learned from her parents. Over the past 18 months, Peace Takes Courage has evolved into a multimedia campaign to tell the truth about the harsh realities of the U.S. war in Iraq, and its contradiction with the teachings of Jesus Christ.

When I met her and her mother in late summer, Ava had just finished a dizzying round of national media attention. Her sudden fame included a presentation at the national convention of Daily Kos, an interview on CNN, a reference in the New York Times, and, most exciting to her, a mention in Rolling Stone magazine.
(snip)

AGAIN, PLEASE NOTE: To read the rest of the article, you will have to sign in as a visitor and give your e-mail address.

41. These are the next 4 paragraphs....
to stay within DU guidelines.....

The media buzzed because of one of her web site’s Flash animations, titled “What Would Jesus Do?” In it, a child sings “Jesus Loves Me” as horrifying photos of Iraqi children, wounded by war, slide across the computer screen. The animation caught the attention of other anti-war activists, and Ava found herself a center of attention.

The startling juxtaposition of innocent faith and painful reality are typical of the Peace Takes Courage web site. In many ways, the site reflects the same kinds of juxtapositions found in Ava herself.

For someone on the verge of being sweet sixteen, Ava was a remarkably poised and focused young woman, unlike the materialistic girls who throw their parents into mountains of debt for birthday parties on MTV’s “Sweet Sixteen.” At the same time, like a genuine teen-ager, she was passing up the carbohydrates offered on our dinner menu because someone told her she looked “fat” in her CNN interview. (She’s not; she’s simply a teen-ager whose body is still developing). She wouldn’t smile for a photograph, either; she wanted to hide the braces on her teeth.

Ava and her mother, Tamara, acknowledged that the sudden interest in Ava’s efforts has been a challenge, but one they relished nonetheless. Tamara said her gifted daughter has long been someone who bucked society’s systems. (Tamara’s last name, which is different from Ava’s, and her occupation are being withheld to protect her daughter). For instance, Ava got into trouble in the third grade for a book report on Franklin Roosevelt, her favorite president. Her teacher insisted that she couldn’t possibly have read and comprehended such an advanced book by herself, and gave her an embarrassing lecture in front of her class.

<snip> to pick up where hwmnbn left off!

"Then when I turned it in early for extra credit, which he told us we could do, he didn’t give me any extra credit. I did still get an A on the report though,” she said with a smile.

Now Ava is home-schooled, because her mother discovered that the Alabama high school she attended was stifling her daughter’s intellect and freedom of expression, even her soul.

“My teacher came to class one day and said he was a card-carrying Republican—he actually held up his card -- and told us that anyone who was in his right mind ought to be one, too,” Ava said.

Her mother added: “I went to have a conference with the principal, and when I got there the atmosphere of the school was just so oppressive, I didn’t even keep the appointment. I took her out of school, and we’ve home-schooled ever since.”
