On boycotts and MLK
Edited on Wed Jan-23-08 06:14 AM by live love laugh
I have posted at DU, particularly as a newbie, about the need to boycott the media and the networks. Always, somebody (a netvocate I suspect) would jump in and denounce the viability of boycotting the media. It just wouldn't work they would say.

Well after being reminded this week that it took over 300 days for the southern bus boycott to break the bus companies and make them turn around their racist ways during MLK's day, I have renewed hope. I think a media boycott would work. Look at what they are doing to writers. That in itself is enough that you should be turning off your TV sets. They don't want to pay for creativity, they imagine shows can get by without the input of skilled craftspeople--and worst of all--they assume and take for granted that you will watch. And you do. And you will--all the while ranting about how terrible and biased they are.

My solution and I hope yours is to boycott the televised media. In the past, I had advocated selecting one network--but I see the futility in that, since advertisers are everywhere and will move from one place to the next. The answer has to be to turn all of them off like they turn us off--the liars, the hacks, the biased "reporters". Turn them off.

If people could inconvenience themselves by walking wherever they had to go for a year, how hard can it be to turn off the television? Movies and videos in the form of DVD's and CDs and games would be allowed but otherwise--turn it off.

I believe that if America turns off their TVs we really can take back the media. Do you? Can you do it?
