WASHINGTON, D.C. -- ...

In his lengthy statement, the Ohio congressman said, "The President and Vice President lied and 4,000 of our soldiers died. The President and Vice President lied and a million innocent Iraqis died in a war that'll cost us two trillion dollars while people here in the states are losing their jobs, their health care, their homes, their dignity. Lies are weapons of mass destruction. Lies are also an impeachable offense. Monday, January 28th is the State of the Union. We already know the State of the Union, it's a lie."

After minor commotion on the floor and opposition by Republicans, the ostracized presidential candidate moved to have his words taken off the record.

Kucinich said, "I ask unanimous consent to withdraw the offending words, to the end that they be stricken from the record and that I be permitted to revise and extend my remarks for the record."

Last April and November, Kucinich almost had the house debating the impeachment of Vice President Cheney....

8. I'm thinking that Dennis got a phone call from the leadership
and he was told to withdraw his comments.

He's up for re-election and has been said to be having trouble.

I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT THIS MAN IS BEING SHUT UP.

21. house rules sez you can't call prez/v-prez a liar
Edited on Wed Jan-23-08 04:37 PM by radfringe
so here's my suggestion - substitute the word liar for something innocuous like ... banana...

as in the president repeated bananaed about reasons why Iraq was a threat

today the president bananaed about the economy

bush is a big fat banana

banana banana pants on fire -- doesn't rhyme but who cares

27. Cheney can say "Go fuck yourself" but Kucinich can't tell the truth?
Yes, the powers that be are rising in his home district in order to defeat him in the next local election, according to an email I'd received today. Tell the truth, and be attacked on all sides. Happens to me, happens to him, happens to anyone who dares to stand up for the truth, and it's worth it to fight for it all the way, no matter what.

Or the bad guys will take everything as soon as we stop for a single moment.

32. Kucinich said it in his speech on the house floor
while it was in session. If Kucinich held a press conference or something similar and said bush/cheney were a bunch of "bananas" - then it would be ok

he could have also used other phrases which "implied" they were liars, and it would be acceptable:

Main Entry: liar
Part of Speech: noun
Definition: falsifier
Synonyms: cheat, con artist, con man, deceiver, deluder, dissimulator, equivocator, fabler, fabricator, fabulist, false witness, falsifier, fibber, jive turkey, maligner, misleader, perjurer, phony, prevaricator, promoter, storyteller, trickster

or lie

Main Entry: lie
Part of Speech: noun
Definition: untruth
Synonyms: aspersion, backbiting, calumniation, calumny, complete distortion of the facts, corker, deceit, deception, defamation, detraction, dishonesty, disinformation, distortion, evasion, fable, fabrication, falsehood, falseness, falsification, falsity, fib, fiction, fish story, forgery, fraudulence, guile, hyperbole, inaccuracy, invention, libel, mendacity, misrepresentation, misstatement, myth, obloquy, perjury, prevarication, revilement, reviling, slander, subterfuge, tale, tall story*, terminological inexactitude, vilification, whopper

24. I was wondering the same thing. Did DK withdraw his entire speech, or just a portion?
and why was the "commotion" that ensued on the House floor after his speech deleted and not part of the video???

does ANYone know?

16. It needs to be said and it needs to be IN THE RECORD.
What a bunch of crap or maybe I just don't understand politics but I think it needs to be in the record if only so future Americans can note that some brave souls did try to prevent the aberration this nation will become.

17. Sounds like a parliamentary move
Edited on Wed Jan-23-08 03:55 PM by Strawman
According to House Rules:

"C. Conduct During Debate:

Words Taken Down: A Member should avoid impugning the motives of another Member, the Senate, the Vice President or the President, using offensive language, or uttering words that are otherwise deemed unparliamentary. These actions are strictly against the standing Rules of the House and are subject to a point of order. This is made by a Member "demanding that the gentleman's (or gentlewoman's) words be taken down." If this happens in the Committee of the Whole, the Committee of the Whole rises and the Speaker must return to the Chair and rule on the propriety of the words used. In the case of remarks regarding the Senate and the President, the Chair may take the initiative and admonish Members for unparliamentary references.

Often the offending Member obtains unanimous consent to withdraw the inappropriate words or the demand is withdrawn before the Speaker rules and then the Member proceeds in order. However, if the Member's words are ruled out of order, they may be stricken from the Congressional Record by motion or unanimous consent, and the Member will not be allowed to speak again on that day except by motion or unanimous consent (clause 4 of Rule XVII). "

Maybe that was his way of calling them liars in the floor of the House while remainign within the rules of appropriate conduct. In any case he said what he meant to say and everyone knows he meant it, retraction or not. Good for him.

20. I believe he asked to revise his remarks because of parliamentary
protocol. It is against the rules to call anyone a liar on the floor of either the House or the Senate. He was most likely threatened with disciplinary action.

23. i don't think he was "threatened" so much as
he faced the likelihood that the chair would order his words taken down and, under the rules, he would then lose the privilege of speaking the rest of the day or of being able to extend or revise his remarks. I doubt there would have been any more to it than that.

33. Not the Only Thing He Should Create a Commotion About
Go in there and let them have it for being silent about the media exclusion that has gone on in America against you, Dennis. Use your time to speak on the House floor to highlight how we need media reform.

Go where no other candidate dares to go and we will vote for you. That's why we keep your campaign alive, Dennis. You're the only fearless candidate running for the presidency.

He cannot be bought or bossed.
