School struggles to process principal's arrest

Before classes started this morning at Van Buren Middle School, an announcement came over the intercom. It was to explain why Principal Anthony Giancola was led off campus in handcuffs yesterday, after he purchased crack cocaine in his school office from an undercover cop.

"Yesterday, there was a sad incident at our school that I need to talk to you about. As you may have heard, Mr. Giancola was arrested yesterday and charged with a very serious crime .... You have seen some news reports telling you about what's happened. As I see it, these are very serious charges. And the case is still under investigation. The police are doing their job investigating the case so that they can gather all the facts and be fair to everyone.

"When we learned about this yesterday, most of us were shocked and then disappointed. Mostly, I think we are feeling sad. From what I understand, Mr. Giancola won't be coming back to our school. But right now, this is what is best for Mr. Giancola. He needs some time to straighten out some things in his life. He was a very big part of our school family and we'll miss him. Please keep him in your prayers.

"The only thing he said to reporters yeserday was that he was sorry. I believe he was talking to all of us here at Van Buren when he said that.
