Suze Orman: Gay and Proud of it

Financial guru Suze Orman is gay
by John in DC · 2/23/2007 02:45:00 PM ET

She wishes she could marry her girlfriend. Wow.

In an interview for The New York Times Magazine this coming Sunday, financial guru and TV host Suze Orman gets on Deborah Solomon's case for not looking out for her own money, partly because "you are a woman." This inspires Solomon to ask Orman if she is married.

Orman says she "has a relationship with life," so Solomon presses her, and Suze then reveals that her "life partner" is Kathy Travis and, "We're going on seven years. I have never been with a man in my whole life. I'm still a 55-year-old virgin."

Orman says they'd like to get married, and both "have millions of dollars in our name. It's killing me that upon my death, K.T. is going to lose 50 percent of everything I have to estate taxes. Or vice versa."

Good for her. That was rather gutsy.

1. Well, cool. Good for her.
I have no opinion one way or another about Suze Orman, but congratulations to her. And welcome to life outside the closet, Ms. Orman.

4. yeah, here's to ya, Suze
I bet it felt good.
I bet after the fact she asked herself why in the heck she hadn't said so before.

---end of serious portion-----

Now if we could just get gwb to offhandedly say "I've been a complete asshole for years"

8. I've read all of her books, and she writes in such a way
that even this mere woman (I) can understand basic financial investing. My only problem with her is her statement about the inheritance tax, so I guess she is for abolishing it altogether.

12. It's not inheritance if it's your spouse
Inheritance is for other people - your life partner should by default get all your stuff once you die.

14. Well, technically...
If "virginity" is "the state of never having had sexual intercourse," and sexual intercourse is "sexual contact between individuals involving penetration of the erect penis into the vagina" then hey...she's a virgin.

16. sexual intercourse can have lots of definitions so in my book she's not technically a virgin
she's a woman who's never had sex with a man, but has had sex all the same. not.a.virgin.

Not about the inheritance- about your support for repuke repeal of the inheritance tax. Fortunately, some very responsible and very wealthy folks, headed by Bill Gates Sr. and the Oscar Meyer heir, started a group to fight against repeal. And I also have an inheritance coming. I don't want the inheritance tax repealed. It's a very, very bad idea.

30. You realize that's NOT what she said, don't you?
You can keep the inheritance tax and let gays marry (or have civil unions with all the benefits of marriage) and avoid the inheritance tax. She didn't specify which she preferred -- she was simply complaining that her life partner would pay a stiff penalty Orman died (which "family heirs" wouldn't).

They wanna bring up the Inheritance tax issue forgetting the fact that I liked her cuz she has guts and she's beyond cool for commin out.

Liberals can suck the fun out of a rice crispy treat. Buhwawa.

Secretly I don't know shit about the inheritance tax issue. I don't even really give a shit...my parents will spend all their dough long before they die.

9. 55 year old virgin?
Oh. I never realized that virginity only applied to male female relationships. Guess she hasn't done the deed with her partner, or anyone else for that matter.

I guess that makes my boyfriend a virgin because he never had sex with a woman. Suze doesn't seem to "proud" of the fact if she had to be pressed about it, and declared she had a relationship with life. I guess that's what she calls Kathy.

I am glad she finally admitted it, but hardly think it gutsy to come out only after she made her millions on her books rather than comming out at the height of her popularity. I guess some of us old queens have a different idea of what gutsy is.

19. WOW! Her Reputation was based on her Hubby divorced her and she had to make her own way in life....
She got lots of sympathy for being a "self made woman" after her husband "threw her out" (as she once said) and now she's saying she's been a Female advocate in a great relationship?

It doesn't seem right to define a gay person's sexual status by a straight experience.

41. good lord
I've always thought it weird to call a male a virgin for not having had sex with a woman. I grew up with the impression that a virgin was a specific definition - like a heifer - a female not yet boinked :)

The vestal virgins were all young women. no horny teenage guys. seems like virgins were once a "girls only" club

If guys can be virgins (which is the first leap) and stop being virgins if they boink a woman, why would they not stop being virgin if they boink a guy? Or a sheep? Or the rumproast?

Women who lose their hymen horseback riding or in gymnastics or whatever are still considered to be virgins, are they not? If they can be considered not virgin because they've had a really good time with another woman, well, what if that horseback ride was more thrilling than most people realized?

So ultimately, most of us lose our virginity in private, I suppose. :)

This is all just silly.

45. Suze Orman Show
I love the Suze Orman show. She gives good financial advice and seems to really care about the people who call into her show asking for advice, and wanting to protect them (and us) from unscrupulous people who want to lead them on the wrong path, moneywise.

Also it's an entertaining show - which I wouldn't expect from a show about money.

I always kind of wondered if she was liberal or conservative - I know she didn't seem to be happy about the bankrupcy bill, and talks about how tax rates are likely to go up in the future cause of the big deficit so is an advocate of the Roth IRA. Of course maybe this is just common sense for someone giving advice about money.

I was thinking, I wish she would do a show to help people going into the armed forces, to help them protect themselves against some of the things that seem to be happening - like they were talking about with the Walter Reed story - people not getting disability benefits - signing them away just to get to go home, and crediters going after them for pay for combat pay they were given while in the hospital, and people not being able to get their death benefits to the people they want them to go to (grandparents raising their children). I am not sure what advice she could give, but I was thinking this would be a good way to help the troops - to do a show giving them financial advice unique to their situation, like she did about Hurricane Katrina.

Meg
