DU vrs DailyKOS
I enjoy DU a lot, but sometimes I get the impression that there is a lot of rightwing bias in some of the posts and also in some of the deletions by the DU assistants. May be my imagination, but I'm also wondering if there are more progressive/leftwing types at DailyKOS.

That's where I would prefer to spend more quality time, because I am trying to limit the signals from rightwing ideologues, it's essentially noise and not much of a coherent signal anyway, I suppose a lot of these types on DU subscribe to DNC party platforms, moderate conservatives who are not lacking enough consciousness (or conscious) to go Freeper or Repug all the way.

Has anyone spent enough time over at DailyKOS to size up the crowd there, wrt DU?

11. I hear that on dKos too about DU....
LOL...small world :D

DKos is member managed, I like that. I think Skinner has a plan to upgrade to more member managed in March?

18. that's just it, I've been getting deleted messages
by some of the DU helpers around here lately.

For example, I responded recently to a DU thread from someone who had a strong abhorrance to military uniforms. I made the remark that people in the military, from my personal experience of 3 yrs. in US Army, they tend to be mindless automatons who are trained to kill without questioning authority. That got me an instant deletion, someone whined about that and my message got zapped by one of the DU helpers. Whatever happened to free speech here?

It makes DU a much smarter, more Liberal place.

13. Yeah, sure. I haven't begun to use ignore lists yet
and I think that would be a good start. If the ignore list meets those requirements as in the OT, yeah sure, I'd love to have it and I'll cut 'n paste if there isn't a quicker way to do it with the DU settings. Probably you should send as a separate message rather than as a thread here, so no one gets blatantly offended and whines to the admin.

5. Apples and Oranges
Both are great Democratic forums, I've been a member of both for over 3 years.

I think Dkos is a little more cerebral, but DU is a lot more fun. Hope that helps.

6. DU is more free-form than daily KOS, IMO.
Even our popular posters don't have to hold any particularly party line to gain a following. So, no, I don't think I agree at all.

7. I read both regularly
I'm inclined to agree there are more progressives on Kos.
But I think there's more interaction here.
The threads on Kos are more difficult to have a dialogue, imho

17. does not compute, DailyKOS was started in
2002 by Salvadoran emigre Markos Moulitsas Zúniga. In any event, I thought he was a right winger because he said he was threated by FMLN and left the country and came to USA. Hmmm, got to wonder about that, why would FMLN have been hostile to a leftist Salvadoran?

Never heard of the dailyobama site. That's your critic of above, right?

10. Daily Kos has not addressed any issues regarding election integrity
until very recently.

This issue is paramount to our democracy.

That's why I stick around despite all the BS.

Have a nice day.

12. I go back and forth -
Edited on Thu Jan-24-08 07:29 PM by waiting for hope
There are a ton of Edwards supporters, and since Iowa, more Obama ones too. The difference I see is in the quality of the posts, not to down grade the posts here but there are fewer, thus making them a bit more substantive. Plus, you can only post one Diary a day, so it seems people are making that one count - now, that being said, there are quite a few trollish ones too. Once you join up and become a trusted member (like having so many posts here before being able to do an OP), you get to recommend and troll rate (you are allowed 5 per day - that's pretty neat), after a comment has received so many troll rates it becomes hidden. You can get a bit lost over there too, with the only one diary per day and have celebrities posting (KO, Ned Lamont, John Kerry), the number of replies get a bit much. It's not unusual to have a Diary with 500 or more replies. I tend not to jump on if there is more than 100.

Hope that helps!

16. I used to lurk at DailyKos
until the "pie fight" (for details, see http://dkosopedia.com/wiki/Pie_fight). (By the way, I didn't particularly object to the ad itself. It was the fallout that drove me away.)

While there is a suitable contingent of "frat boy" types here at DU, that attitude is not institutionalized here, nor is it supported at the highest levels. I can't imagine Skinner referring to the women of DU as part of the "sanctimonious women's studies set".

Your mileage may vary. Wildly.

19. I read the front page at Daily Kos, 2-3x/day.
But I don't venture into their threads. I really don't like their structure much. DU has a much better flow and offers a number of ways to track your interests. Plus, I'm used to the look and feel here.

One thing I've recently discovered, the "ignore GD primary" thread button in your user profile. It's made my reading experience much more enjoyable.

They're trying to drive people like you away. Don't fall for it. That's why God Skinner gave us the Ignore list and Hide Threads feature, after all. :-)

24. Kos has a better system for filtering out trolls.
I think DU could benefit from a "trollrating" system. Discussions are often as lighthearted as any you'll find here, but much of the vitriol found here isn't found at Kos because "trusted users" can hide trollish posts from view.

I don't know how that could work here, though, as the system behind this forum is completely different.

And everything is so tiny over at Kos. Trying to read the threads is like trying to follow a school of guppies.

28. Over at Kos they are more sunny optimist, let's organize! types
A lot of us here at DU are jaded revolutionaries who have been beaten down too many times. Note the "underground" in the title. We're Dirty Fucking Hippies here, no lie--and an easy target for trolls.

If you actually want to get together and do something about politics, rather than snark out or helplessly peer into the dark abyss, Kos is for you. Altho there's quite a bit of abyss-peering there too, if you can figure out how to go from place to place.

It's an individual choice. Go where you feel welcome.

29. All I know is that
Kos hated Kerry, was in the CIA and was a Reagan Democrat.

Also-the don't "let" you discuss 9/11-don't even have a dungeon.

He also refused discussion of voting irregularities after 2004.

He's mainstream of the mainstream if that's your bag.

In major defense of DU-they have never ever censored me-I've been able to say my true feelings for four years-and I'm not exactly mealy mouthed about nothing.

This place is not radical but I must say it's the zeitgeist of the times.

There are people on here that get it. And they always have. They are really invaluable-they have made me feel so not alone in these nightmare years.

32. KOS and rightwing past
Well, I have do reservations about some of his background, according to the KOS, it was started in
2002 by Salvadoran emigre Markos Moulitsas Zúniga. He said he was threated by FMLN and left the country and came to USA. Hmmm, got to wonder about that, why would FMLN have been hostile to a leftist Salvadoran?

Of course, my conspiracy hat is on, to suggest that it is a device for attracting leftists so they will be id'ed and marked, that seems a little far-fetched but OTOH this was done in Chile or Argentina I think, as a tactic for id'ing and rounding up dissent for elimination.

31. Du is so much more user-friendly...
there's more variety in topics, in ease of posting, and in the links.

I read Markos occasionally, but am constantly on DU, reading, lurking, but rarely posting.
This site is lively, and its alive. That's not to say there I agree totally and 100% of everything posted here. But this is the place to be! I'm gratified that the MSM doesn't spy on us to hear what the real people say.
