Looks like Chucklenutz and the two parties in Congress have all climbed into bed together and compromised on a proposed economic stimulus package that will - they hope - steer the nation away from recession, if it isn't already too late.

CNN reports that the deal would "send checks to most taxpayers . . . individuals earning $75,000 or more or couples earning at least $150,000 will be excluded from the rebates. In addition, proposals to increase food stamps and extend unemployment benefits are not part of the agreement."

Further, sources told CNN that "the deal would pay taxpayers $600 and two-wage-earner households as much as $1,200. A Democratic aide and a Republican aide said the deal will include an additional amount per child amounting to about $300. The deal was reached between Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, who has been negotiating on behalf of the Bush administration, House Minority Leader John Boehner and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, sources on Capitol Hill familiar with the negotiations told CNN Thursday. Boehner and Pelosi are expected to be meeting Thursday with members of their own parties."

But wait a minute; didn't we try the Bush tax cuts before with little effect on the sinking economy? Is this the only trick they've got? Remind me again of the definition of insane; isn't it doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results?

In world news, the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate.

Reuters reports that "Thousands of Gazans streamed past a flattened border wall into Egypt on foot or by bicycle for a second day on Thursday to stock up on goods scarce in the coastal strip, defying an Israeli blockade. A handful of camouflaged Egyptian riot forces watched from a distance as Gazan men, some dressed in traditional black and white scarves, grabbed sheep by the horns and dragged them over the border, a day after Palestinians blasted it open. Children at the border, some of them barefoot, scrambled over the flattened remnants of what had been a towering rust-colored metal wall, turning parts of it into a slide."

The newspaper the Christian Post put it this way: "Churches in the Middle East denounced Israel�s blockade of Gaza as an 'immoral act.' The blockade imprisoned 1.5 million people without proper food or medicine, the church leaders voiced with concern. The punishment left large parts of the Palestinian territory, which also borders Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea, without access to electricity. Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak had ordered the strip sealed off Jan. 17 because of persistent rocket fire from Gaza into Israel.

The article continues "'To deny children and civilians their necessary basic commodities are not the ways to security but rather throw the region into further and more dangerous deterioration. This siege will not guarantee the end to rocket firing, but will only increase the bitterness and suffering and invite more revenge, while the innocents keep dying,' the statement admonished."

Gee, and it seems like it was only a few days ago that the dry drunk deluded optimist in the oval office predicted a lasting peace settlement in that "part of the world." Did I dream that?
