Drive-by Recommendations...
If you recommend a thread -- please have the courtesy to post to it.

You don't even have to form a sentence, just say something!

7. note: some of us are pressed for time
i often recommend threads that i don't have the time to comment on, because i want other people to read them.

i'm not rude, i'm busy. got to get to work now, i'm late.

8. I agree; people put effort into putting info out there for everyone's
consumption, it'd be nice if some of the good ones didn't sink for lack of comment.

10. Many times I see well crafted threads that deserve notice, and you're right...
If I don't have time to respond, I'll rec & kick - simply posting in the headline "K&R n/t" (n/t meaning, "no text)

11. I'd recommend a stolen car AND stolen gun for a drive-by....
and if you're gonna do it, you might as well be driving drunk, smoking a cigarette, talking on a cell phone and not wearing a seatbelt, too..

just a little tip from yer old uncle Ghost...

12. Please don't assume that discourtesy is involved.
A recommendation are two different things, and are two different ways to express enthusiasm. Not everyone knows the difference, and not all of those who do think that every recommendation demands a kick. Threads that are already stuck at the top of the page don't need a kick with every recommendation.

19. Good point - And I actually see a rec as quite the opposite of a discourtesy...
This understood, I see allot of new threads that get more rec's than replies.

I understand that we can be busy & often don't have time to read long OP's (while appreciating the headline).

Thanks for your clarification.

13. Why?
I don't see anything discourteous about recommending a thread without posting to it. There are a large number of reasons I can think of for doing that, and discourtesy isn't one of them.

Why do you think it's discourteous to recommend a thread without posting to it?

14. One reason
I don't know about it being discourteous, but often a thread will sink even though it has a few recs. Threads will take off sometimes because of the group effect.

15. If I have nothing to add to the discussion, why should anyone be subjected to my opinions?
If my rec alone isn't validation enough, then the OP needs more attention than I care to give.

The only point I can see to putting names to rec's is the compilation of a list of "friends", and it follows that "those who aren't with me (or share my views) are my enemies." Anyone could troll the postings and compile such a list and pigeon-hole every member of DU.

Sorry, but this forum is plenty Democratic enough for me, as is.

17. Perhaps a jab at the rec button could be the same as a
"present vote". It could demonstrate that there are things about the OP that one agrees with, but feels there are other things that make it a flawed OP, therefore it is interesting enough to recommend, but not enough to make a statement about.

Or not. YMMV. :)

18. When I do a drive-by rec, it's because the poster of the
thread nails it so well that there is nothing that I can add. It's a compliment dood! ;)
