Hey did anyone hear Franklin Delano Huckabee at last night's debate talking about
using the proposed economic stimulus money to rebuild the infrastructure as opposed to giving out tax rebates?

He also added that the companies who would do the infrastructure rebuilding projects should be required to employ US workers and use US manufactured materials. I almost choked.

1. I am sure he was just lying to make himself look more centrist
when in fact he is a fundamentalist religious freak who is probably the single most dangerous person running.

3. He's either lying or very confused.
He also wants a "fair" tax that is hugely regressive.

2. Franklin Delano Huckabee....lol
And yes, I think it's a better use of the money (that we don't have) to use it on infrastructure.

4. I know. If we're going to run up the debt, I'd rather the money stay here than
go to China. I'm sure that a lot of people will use the rebate to buy something which will most likely be made in China or some other cheap labor country.

5. You know, it's going to be hilarious and sad if our next actual populist
president comes from the Republican Party, but at this point it wouldn't surprise me. The Democratic Party's establishment is just as corporatist, just wealth-serving as the GOP's.

7. Bloomberg said the same thing--pretty sure Hucky read the article--

he cribs his ideas on everything from someone else (like the Fair Tax). He is accused of plagiarizing his immigration plan.

10. Curious, because it's actually a good idea
Has any Democrat proposed any big infrastructure rebuilding project?

The last I heard, it was anywhere from $2 to $4 trillion to repair, replace & upgrade our country's infrastructure.

Imagine how many jobs could be created by that big of an investment? Bridge/road/highway repairs; power grid upgrades & improvements; improving existing power plants; green technology; expanding alternative fuel research & investment...

11. I guarantee you Huckleberry didn't come up with it. He doesn't
know his ass from a hole in the ground, so he hired James Pinkerton away from Newsday to help him create policy positions--Bloomberg said this publicly on the 23rd, Huckleberry says it for the first time on the 24th. Bloomberg knows what he's doing, however--he would be a threat to the Dem nominee in a bad economy.

12. Oops, I got the flavor of it wrong--Bloomberg
addressed infrastructure as part of the stimulus plan, but doesn't say he'd rely on it instead of helping families:

WASHINGTON (AP) - New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg accused the White House and Congress on Wednesday of negotiating a shortsighted economic stimulus package after years of lousy financial management.

``We can't borrow our way out of this. The jig is up,'' Bloomberg said in prepared remarks to be delivered Wednesday evening before the U.S. Conference of Mayors, which is honoring his environmental efforts....

...``They spent most of this decade running up bills with reckless abandon and when the economy started heading for the ditch, the special interest giveaways got even bigger. They ate the seed corn without worrying about the next year's harvest. Well, the next year is here, and the seed corn is gone. All we've got is a barn full of IOU's,'' he said...

...Bloomberg argued that the government's first goal should be to stop the bleeding in the housing sector. ``What good is a rebate going to do for a family who's about to lose their home?'' he argued.

Instead, the mayor argued, the government should:

- adopt a capital budget to oversee long-term infrastructure spending, instead of the current year-to-year spending.

- offer financial counseling, modified loans, and in some cases subsidized loans to homeowners who find themselves unable to afford their mortgage.

- overhaul immigration laws to bring more workers in, rather than keep workers out.
