Blame Canada!
The traffic down near the US Capitol this afternoon was backed up, thanks to some anti-war protesters safely ensconced on Canadian soil. Canada's embassy occupies a very prominent position between the Capitol and the White House, in keeping with our special relationship. It was a nice cap to an important errand down that way. Pretty much the entire open air space under the embassy was filled.

... coulda gone out for beers. Avoid that side of the Hill this evening, if you're in a hurry. Go down the House side instead.

4. Apologies from this Canadian DUer...
Not for the protestors, but for that grotesque architectural monstrosity. My tax dollars at work... :puke:

5. It Grabs the Attention...
... of passers-by, and there is *always* at least one exhibit of interest (e.g., the Inuit peoples of Canada, etc.).

Honestly, it is very effective at drawing Americans' attention to Canada. Which province are you in?

It does rather grow on you, doesn't it? BTW, I lived in DC for many years, and there was plenty worse than this, if I recall--most of it on K Street! :hi:

21. the cheese grater!
It's got some very surreal postmodernist doodads on it (the little dome with the acoustical trick, and the silent waterfall). And then there's the black Bill Reid sculpture in the reflecting pool (the green twin is in the Vancouver Airport). Plus those weird broken pillars that don't do anything.

I'm convinced that any visitors come reeling out of there, wondering just how demented the Canadian psyche really is ...

... of "us" not noticing "them," but I honestly got a chuckle out of the unexpected newfound use or that open-air design.

They could process political asylum visas on the spot!

28. Hee hee.
It's all part of the Canadian Conspiracy. The key to understanding this architecture is to understand that in Canada, we don't really have patriotism as such, we just have a long-standing sort of low-key national identity crisis. That explains everything.

Political asylum visas could be issued on the spot!

15. OOOOHHH canada OOOOHHH canada
by the way did you know on the week following bush's re(s)election in 2004 - the canadian immigration website had so many visitors checking out information and downloading info that it almost crashed?

off topic - good news on my car: will take about 2 weeks to fix it, but because a deer hit me, my deductible is only $100 (not the $500 I expected) because I have a "deer" rider on my policy. now I have to go check out car rentals...
