What is the matter with my county?
Our county, Otero County, home of Alamogordo which is usually named as site of the first atom bomb test and a Harry Potter book-burning church, is so anti-UN that it passed several resolutions with fines and jail time for anyone supporting a United Nations World Heritage Site designation for the White Sands National Park. Today's newspaper had the headline, "County Issues Threat to Feds." Commissioner Doug Moore "... suggested the letter identify the violation of four ordinances and provide a notice of intent to sue if WSNM is not removed from the tentative list.
Commissioner Doug Moore said whoever signed the letter recommending WSNM be on the list in the first place should receive a citation.
The county ordinance states no one can sign such a letter.
"This is a verbatim violation of the language," Moore said.
"We need to go after the guy who signed the letter."
The maximum penalty under the law for violating the ordinance is $300 and 30 days in jail.
During unscheduled communications, Janet White stood to support the decision.
"On behalf of 1,200 people who signed the petition (against WSNM becoming a World Heritage Site) I would like to commend you."
