I would hope this video can be discussed over and above this current campaign
http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0108/Asking_Hillary.html

http://www.healthyplace.com/communities/Gender/gayisok/glbt_suicide_study.htm

In it Senator Clinton addresses some questions via the web. The last one is a lengthy answer about suicide and depression among gay teens. The link below that shows why it is such an important issue. Gays make up 30% of suicides and also 30% of gays and lesbians attempt suicide. To put it in mathematical terms say you know 10 gay people. There is a 2% chance that none of them tried to commit suicide. There is a 12% chance 1 did. There is a 23% chance 2 did. There is a 26% chance three did. There is a 20% chance 4 did. There is a 10% chance 5 did. There is a 4% chance 6 did. There is just under 1% chance 7 did. Figures are using binomial distrubution. In a country of approximately 18 million gays (6% of 300 million) there would be an expectation of 5.4 million of them attempting suicide. That is one suicide attempt per day, every day, for 14,500 years. Or one suicide attempt every single day since 12,000 years before Jesus walked the earth.

In the 18 years since the report I cite the gay rights movement has made tremendous strides. But we will be one of history's worst failures if we can't reverse those numbers. It does take a village to raise up a gay teen. This issue will matter no matter who is our next President. 5.4 million of your brothers and sisters matter.

1. She seemed to say that she'd "done a lot of work on this issue"

in NY.

Anyone know what work specifically she is talking about?

Also, the "high school for gay teens" that "we have in NY" was established in 1985 when she was living in Arkansas.

Not that she explicity claims credit for it but the casual listener might get that impression.

2. I would imagine she was referring to the Senate as much as NY
though I don't know for sure.

N.Y.C. to Open High School for GaysMonday, July 28, 2003

E-MAIL STORY
PRINTER FRIENDLY VERSION
NEW YORK — The city is opening a full-fledged high school for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students -- the first of its kind in the nation, The Post has learned.

>>>Operating for two decades as a small alternative program with just two classrooms, the new Harvey Milk High School officially opens as a stand-alone public school with 100 students in September.

The school is undergoing a $3.2 million in city-funded renovations approved by the old Board of Education in June of last year. It will eventually take in 170 students by September 2004, more than tripling last year's enrollment.

The Hetrick-Martin Institute -- the gay-rights youth-advocacy group that manages and helps finance the school in conjunction with New York's Department of Education -- has hired the school's first principal.

In the past, Harvey Milk High School -- named after the slain gay San Francisco politician -- was assigned an "off-site" supervisor who also oversaw several other schools.
>>>

...with much difficulty and over much opposition and without any help whatsoever from Ms. Clinton. The article above ( note:*Fox News*; *NY POST*) is about the opening of a NEW *BUILDING*, to house the already existing Harvey Milk High School.

It's possible that she had some role in getting the NEW BUILDING in 2003. I doubt it. It would be unlike her plus a quick google search doesn't find her in any association with the opening of the new building... though there was the usual public debate about rights and problems of GLBT kids which she apparently managed to sidestep in her usual fashion. (Please keep in mind this is NYC and NYS wherein it is comparatively VERY EASY to be found to be in support of gay issues.)

I'll be happy to credit her on this if anyone can find her in a serious advocacy role in opening the new building in 2003. But the HMHS open in 1985.

Here's the facts about the HMHS from wikipedia:

3. Gay teens take a tremendous hit
In terms of suicide. And given how incredibly difficult this society makes life for gay young people in many areas of the country, I know it is something all of us need to work on.

But teens of all persuasions have high numbers of suicide.

In fact, the high rate of suicide for teens and young adults is one reason why the DOD pooh poohs anyone making a big deal over the high numbers of service people in Iraq who take their own lives.

5. true
but we make up either 3 or 5 times as many suicides as we should given our proportion of the population. Military suicides I am sure are way above normal as well.

6. Among teens, affluent areas are more likely for suicide.
And the more brutal neighborhoods give a young person an outlet for their frustration -which is just as dangerous.

The youth in the ghetto kill each other rather than take their own lives.
