Breaking: President of Mormon church dies
Edited on Sun Jan-27-08 10:49 PM by RGBolen
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has died at age 97.

http://www.kutv.com/content/news/local/story.aspx?content_id=aedea6c9-7797-40e8-a1e5-1e7a54050390&rss=991

SALT LAKE CITY - The president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints died on Sunday at the age of 97.

It was announced on Sunday evening that Gordon B. Hinckley, president of the LDS Church since 1995, died from issues related to his age.

Born on June 23, 1910, Hinckley ascended to the church presidency on Mar. 12, 1995. For years, Hinckley served as the 15th prophet of the LDS faith as a successor to Howard W. Hunter.

Hinckley became the oldest president in LDS Church history on Nov. 2, 2006 -- surpassing David O. McKay.

Hinckley might be best known for his aggressive attitude in building LDS temples around the world. As of an. 2008, 124 LDS temples were operating worldwide. Prior to Hinckley's presidency, there were less than 50.

17. Comments like WHAT???
You're just showing me how woefully IGNORANT you are of Romney's campaign. And you managed to be snarkily self-righteous at the very same time!! Heckuva two-fer, there Brownie!

Let's review Mittsy's teary-eyed moments:

He talks about pulling his car over and "sobbing" when his racist LDS church, led by this dead guy, finally "allowed" blacks into it. Of course, they didn't get to go into the "good" part, and their influence was nil, but hey, they were "in!"

He also boo-hooed when he saw a soldier's casket, imagining that one of his chickenhawk kids could be in it.

Today, at a horrible campaign stop in FL aired on CSPAN, he told a big long idiotic story about how he saw a flag flapping in the breeze and he "teared up."

You know how they say "JESUS WEPT?" Well, Mitt gives old Jesus a run for his money.

Here, you read, and you LEARN:

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1207/7415.html

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2007/12/17/romney-tears-up-over-dead_n_77224.html

http://www.blog.newsweek.com/blogs/stumper/archive/2008/01/10/play-misty-for-me-mitt.aspx

Kindly don't try to THINK for me. And don't assume what points I am making, especially when you are operating from incomplete knowledge.

You don't do a very good job of it.

23. You should see the piece of shit he put up in Belmont. The town was up in arms
when he wanted to put zillion foot spires on the thing. Even the scaled back monstrosity is just that.

And that's just fact.

Guess who has a HOUSE in that town? A big house, too, where illegal aliens manicure the lawn? Why, MITTSY does.

Again, you don't research, you don't know JACK. Yet you shoot off your mouth. SELF RIGHTEOUSLY.

Here ya go, a missive from your "fellow atheists" about this particular eyesore, who apparently know more than YOU do on this subject, as well--you click on that link, and read, and learn some more:

http://www.atheists.org/flash.line/rlpa7.htm

Here's another Eyesore variance that lost: http://www.mormonstoday.com/000929/N1WhitePlainsTemple01.shtml

I am uninterested in changing anyone's mind. Why would you ASSume that?

I could give a fuck if you worship dead cockroaches in your broiler pan, frankly. I don't care if you're an atheist OR a Mormon. Or anything else. I would prefer it if you wouldn't try to "infer" anything about me without an iota of knowledge, though.

But hey-- way to keep demonstrating that you don't keep up with the opposition candidates, or even "atheist" news...

1. I don't care if Romney used illegal aliens to work on his lawn... what does that have to do with this? I'm for open immigration, anyways.
2. Zoning laws are overused, and I don't see how this guy building his temple violates anyone's rights or why you have to make snarky comments when he dies.
3. I don't care what other atheists think about anything (I wish they wouldn't be so vocal, though), or about "atheist news", whatever that is.

out of FEAR that the rightwing might read what we discuss and ....WHAT? Be MAD? Decide not to vote for our candidates?

That would be amusing, only it's....dumb.

I have a suggestion for you, there, "water:" Why don't YOU stop trying to tell people what to do, what to think, and what you think they mean? You're getting pretty damned obnoxious, frankly.

And you don't read for comprehension, either, there, bright eyes. My post was about MITT ROMNEY in context of this event--and that point went sailing right over your rather sanctimonious and hubris-laden head.

Since you crave an admission, I'll admit that conversing with you is pretty much a waste of time. You can't read for comprehension, you aren't the sharpest knife in the logic drawer, and you think you're clever, even though you aren't.

61. My second half related to Romney as well. That eyesore ended up in Belmont
only because he had a mansion in the town. Had he lived in Worcester or Springfield, they would have been stuck with it.

It looks like a futuristic prison, plunked down in the midst of an old New England town:

24. What's bigoted about my discussing this guy's approach to blacks in the church OR his
building plans? I am not doing the "magic underwear" crap or anything of that nature. I am simply talking about two VERY factual matters--blacks in the organization and the resistance by townships to temples that are architecturally incongruous and offend communities. Both items happened under this guy's watch.

Look, you can put me on ignore if you'd like, if you can't bear what I have to say.

I simply won't be censored just because it's about "religion." Or a "dead guy." And it matters not to me if it's Cardinal "Above The" Law, the Pope, the Dalai Lama, the Ayatullah Khatami, this fellow, or any other church/religious leader who is hypocritical about human rights and/or diversity.

He didn't become president until the 1990's. Blacks got the priesthood in the 70's. I have no idea why it took the church so long to get around to it, but it was under President Kimball that that change took place.

She pointed out that you apparently are laboring under a severe cognitive dissonance, being a member of a faith that CONDEMNS you.

She's not doing the condemning, your very own church that you defend so desperately is. If you believe in their tenets, that is, and don't regard being a member as the equivalent of belonging to a country club....

53. Again, I am not "attacking"--I am dealing in facts. If you can handle
being a "cafeteria Mormon" and picking and choosing the bits you want to follow, lying to at least some of your fellow Mormons about what you believe and what you don't...and of course you surely must be closeted when you deal with some of those folks, else you'd likely be in a world of shit with them, well, who am I to suggest that your rather dissonant "accomodation" with your faith sounds incredibly dysfunctional?

Keep telling yourself how wonderful they are, if it makes you feel good. I can't imagine how it would, though. Someone's "not quite right" in your faith-world equation--and their tenets say it is YOU.

Funny how you manage to get angry at people who actually feel that you aren't the one with the problem, but that they are.

But apparently the "facts" your dealing with are about me - and you know nothing about me.

what does this mean: "not every member believes what the church teaches" - please note it does not say anything about picking and choosing - its an absolute statement - as in none. But go ahead and keep showing that you have no interest in understanding but just condemning.

FYI everyone I know that is LDS knows I am gay and have a partner - I do not hide it.

I could kiss you a hundred times for this line alone. Will you be here all night? Tip the waiters! :loveya:

PS you make me feel young and pretty thank you so much for that! My tiny ass though feeling long in tooth (can an as feel that way?) thanks you too.

67. I like the rebuilt temple in Nauvoo however.
That bit of history has always interested me. I got a tour as a non-Mormon before that temple opened. It is verboten for me now but still it stands impressively over the Illinois bank of the Mississippi River and I always notice it when I drive down to St. Louis.

70. The one in Belmont (pic upthread) really looks like a futuristic prison
It's the wrong COLOR, the wrong SIZE, and the wrong ARCHITECTURE--plunked down in an old New England town.

It looks like .... IKEA furniture in Buckingham Palace, paper plates at a State Dinner...or something.

It just doesn't GO.

And that thing is TINY compared to what they initially wanted--and they wanted a whole BUNCHA spires--way bigger than what they have now!

Some people's opinions about what looks good are different from the opinions of others-- thank God.

Not being an architect or a designer, I can only base my opinions on what I like or dislike.

82. Well, the town of Belmont had opinions, and they all weighed in on
the "monstrosity" side of things. That pic is the scaled down monstrosity and it is still just hideous.

It doesn't go. It does not match the scale or character of the town. If they'd made it less tall and of brick, it might have helped. Instead it looks like the Death Star.

It's like brown shoes in a world of tuxedos, to paraphrase George Gobel.

32. He would have to create his own planet first, once he becomes a god.
I'm not sure what the timetable on that is. For now, he probably just went back to Kolob. (Elohim's home base)

27. not good for Romney or Democrats...
this will bring attention to Romney's mormonism, which may hurt him on tuesday. We NEED him to be the GOP nominee for an easy Democratic victory, there would be no one in the world easier to beat than Mitt Romney

34. One less cult leader. Will Ratzinger be next?
The LDS cult persecutes GLBT persons. I feel no sadness at this man's passing whatsoever.

Remember, no one gets out alive. Too bad he left a legacy of encouraging hate.

35. Rest in peace Mr. Hinckley
Gordon B. Hinckley was a good man. He was always respectful to other people that were not of his faith. He will be extremely missed.
I'm no fan of the LDS church but I have a great deal of respect for this man.

56. It's too bad it doesn't mean the end of LDS.
They should put something in their bylaws that when their president dies, the religion is ended and all their buildings are sold and given to charity.
