DOWN TO THE WIRE ON FISA: Must convince three more Dem senators
Edited on Mon Jan-28-08 02:50 PM by wtmusic
to vote NO on cloture today at 4:30 EST!

These Democratic Senators voted last week with Republicans to table the version of the FISA bill that excluded telcom amnesty. One of them, Sen. Rockefeller, has already said he'll vote no on cloture on this bill. That means we need to convince three other Democrats on this list to vote against cloture:

* Bayh (202) 224-5623
FAX: (202) 228-1377
* Carper (202) 224-2441
FAX: (202) 228-2190
* Inouye (202) 224-3934
FAX: (202) 224-6747
* Johnson (202) 224-5842
FAX: 202-228-5765
* Landrieu (202)224-5824
FAX: (202) 224-9735
* McCaskill (202) 224-6154
FAX: (202) 228-6326
* Mikulski (202) 224-4654
FAX: (202) 224-8858
* Nelson (FL) (202) 224-5274
FAX: (202) 228-2183
* Nelson (NE) (202) 224-6551
FAX: (202) 228-0012
* Pryor (202) 224-2353
FAX: (202) 228-0908
* Salazar (202) 224-5852
FAX: (202) 228-5036

26. Fax them Hillary's statement:
"Today, I will vote against Republican efforts to shortchange the debate on the FISA Amendments Act, important legislation that would modernize our surveillance laws and give our nation's intelligence professionals the tools they need to fight terrorism and make our country more secure. Rather than allow the Senate the opportunity to consider important amendments to this vital legislation, Republicans are instead blocking meaningful debate on this bill by playing procedural games, choosing instead to score cheap political points at the expense of our Homeland Security."

"This legislation deserves a thorough debate. Several provisions - including those which would have a profound impact on the civil liberties of Americans - need to be the subject of careful deliberation. For example, the bill under consideration gives telecommunication companies blanket retroactive immunity for their alleged cooperation in the administration's warrantless wiretapping program. I continue to believe that a grant of retroactive immunity is wrong, and I have cosponsored Senator Dodd's amendment to remove that provision from the bill. The Bush Administration has blatantly disregarded Americans' civil liberties over the past seven years, and I simply will not trust them to protect Americans' privacy rights. With the temporary Protect America Act set to expire on February 1st, I strongly believe that we need to pass balanced legislation that protects our civil liberties and the rule of law while giving our law enforcement and intelligence agencies the tools they need to protect our country."

27. If we could get Clinton to twist Bayh's arm, and Obama to
do the same with McCaskill, that'd be two.

Has Mikulski endorsed anyone yet?

8. on Hartmann today

the woman who calls in with news from D.C..... sorry I forget her name . . . says she's spoken many times to McCaskill and McCaskill is nowhere near being a progressive Dem. She suggested that McCaskill is more of a Republican. Yes, she's from a red state, but has been a Bush dog since she's arrived in the Senate. Very very disappointing.

15. Results:

Bayh, Carper, Inouye, Johnson, Landrieu -- They've issued no statements, but took my request.

McCaskill -- left message on voice mail.

Mikulski, Nelsons (both), Pryor = busy signal will call back. (Gave me hope that they're being inundated - "those damn bloggers!")

Salazar - disconnected. will call back.

Just a note - Inouye's office is the only one who ASKED for my input. Johnson had the least professional, and Landrieu the most clueless.

17. Every one of them is DLC
EVERY ONE!!! (Well, McCaskill isn't officially, but she is new and the DLC doesn't publish their membership...but her allies in office ARE DLC)

You will not convince these people...they are not Democrats. They are moles designed to make our party ineffective. You are beating your head against the wall calling them.

Anyone still feel like voting for them when the time comes?

29. Thanks, talked to Pryor's office and they said he hasn't come out either for or against immunity for
the telecoms. I countered with his vote last week to table the Judiciary Committee's version of the bill and was told that the tack is force the non-immunity as an amendment this week.

41. You got through, good
however if cloture is invoked there's nothing to stop them from passing the bill as is--with immunity.

At least you were heard by a fence-sitter. Every call counts. :thumbsup:

So what's the deal with intelligence vs. judiciary committee? He makes argument about what came out of intell.. committee, but that's what the intel. community wants shouldn't be the only issue... And sounds like Rockefeller OK with amendments... Ugh.
