NYT printed five LTTEs concerning the war of tabloid news vs world news. The first LTTE expressed hope but the others are just full of apathy or blame.
The Anna Nicole and Britney watchers may not yet have experienced a sense of urgency about the state of the world, but the rest of us, Republicans and Democrats alike, need to cast our votes in the coming primaries to see that the very worst of our candidates will do no harm, and that the very best of our candidates may elevate this country to a state of grace and intelligent compassion.
In the twisted game of lowering our national standards, who is more to blame: the spectators watching the sideshow, or the news media scalping the seats?
And then I decided I didn’t want to live my life angry all the time if it wasn’t going to do any good, if no one would listen. I still pay attention to the “real news,” but then I turn to entertainment to forget it all, because I feel helpless to make a difference.
It is not in spite of the war in Iraq, but because of it, that I and many other like-minded people are happy to focus on the latest Hollywood scandal. We care deeply about the tragic events continuing to unfold in the Middle East, but we’re exhausted and ready for a break.
But when there is absolutely nothing we can do about it, when appeals to elected officials result in no action, when marches on Washington are obstructed and ignored, when you have an administration that seems bent on instilling terror into the hearts of its citizens and promising in vain to keep them safe while mindlessly destroying both the infrastructure and the reputation of the country, well, hey, Anna Nicole and Britney remind us that at least we’re not like them and that there remains a tiny percentage of our lives over which we do have control.
Which means what, Bring on the tabloid media?
