4. how do they rape the American Consumer? do tell
their profit margins, as a percentage of sales, hasn't changed much, you know. what's changed is the price people are willing to pay for their product, and the demand for that product.

or do you have some evidence that ExxonMobil is 'raping the american consumer'?

5. Before you spew about the oil companies . . .
It's too easy, and intellectually dishonest, to just say they "rape" the consumer. They are doing, on a grand scale, what every single business owner, democratic or republican, is doing - maximizing their profits. YES, they have a captive audience, yes we're addicted, and YES, they are pushers.

I'm NOT saying I like it, and I'm not saying "the system" works well for all people - it favors the wealthy - but who really is responsible for their profits? WE ARE!

Before people post about how evil and soul-less they are (OK, they may be soul-less) we should be asking each other:
- Whose the addict here?
- Don't addicts have some responsibilities?
- what have you done to reduce consumption?
- what have you done to conserve energy?
- what have you done to cause you to buy less petroleum?

Complaining without action is what is soul-less.

I finally faced the fact that our family is an energy addict. Something had to be done to ease our concience.

At our house, I started with an electricity analysis using a "Kill-A-Watt" meter, changed ALL my bulbs to CFs, had an energy audit done, fixed a bunch of leaks, and cut our energy bill in half - but more importantly - cut the revenues of the coal and oil companies. This cost almost nothing - so it isn't something the "poor" can't do.

Next we insulated, replaced our big old water heater with a compact flash heater, and cut our gas bill by one third. That hurt the gas company about $100 per month in the winter. Granted, this was a little more costly, but still less than $1000, and it paid for itself within one year.

Now we're into the fun stuff. We took the money we saved on energy over the last three years and bought some solar panels, two small windmills, and some batteries. We're not "off the grid" YET, but we will be in a few years. Then it's "bye" to the coal and oil companies who are supplying our house. I admit this is a more costly option, and not everyone can do it, but it's a possibiity for many.,

As soon as a reasonable electric or Hydrogen car comes out, I'll be getting one. Hybrids and Ethanol makes no sense financially or environmentally.

Oh yea, I dislike the oil companies - let's all do something about it.
