Just got polled about the election--interesting, to say the least. (Mods--this really about the MSM,
not the campaign--try to indulge if possible.)

Presidential preference poll for TIME and a few things really, really stood out to me. So I tell the nice lady I'm a Democrat. So next question--if you had to vote today, yadda, yadda. Fine. Today, Obama. (Tomorrow--who knows??? But I wasn't asked, of course.)

Almost immediately it goes to Bill being involved in HRCs campaign. I start to smell a rat (note: I'm not supporting either one right now, I still plan to vote for Edwards on Tuesday). The stinker: "You are aware that Bill Clinton has been actively campaigning for Hillary Clinton? Do you think that helps or hurts her campaign? How important will he be in her presidency? Positive or negative influence?"

I begin to think like a DUer: "How important was Charles Keating to John McCain (I remember THAT all too well)? Halliburton? Choice Hotels to Mitt Romney? Eh? Eh? (I restrained myself)

Now I';m being asked if one was on the other's ticket as VP, would I be more/less likely to vote for either one? I said I just really can't say.

At this point, I perhaps overreacted--"Are you sure you are doing this for TIME? This sounds like a push-poll (the nice lady--and she was--didn't know what that is but I told her). Near the end, she almost agreed with me that the media was spinning things! (Please note that I was polite to her throughout--I've had crappy jobs, too!)

I can't shake the feeling that I was sort of "played" on this, though. Or maybe I need to walk away from the keyboard...

2. Can I ask
Do you have caller ID? Did the poller from TIME have an identifiable number?

I get so many freaking calls that have no ID. Sadly, a lot of them are from groups that my bank or my phone provider sold my info to. I know because I use this:

3. My son picked up the phone and I never thought to look,
but it's a private number?!

Obviously I won't give it here, but that does seem very odd. I've never been politically polled before--is this SOP?

Private number--strange.

hired to make the calls for TIME.

When you say private, do you mean a residence or just not an 800/866 number?

5. Private--I didn't recognize her name at all.
I find that alarming somehow--her number's in my memory. Maybe it's a false name.

6. Could be someone doing it from home as an outsourcer.
Just the same, it's a pretty crappy way to operate. If TIME is going to hire an outsource company to conduct its polls, they should hire one that better protects their worker's identities.

8. I was polled last week by someone claiming to be from the CDC
They were asking about childhood vaccines. Were I thinking on my feet and as a DU'er, I'd have told her I had three or four pre-school rugrats and that we'd heard childhood vaccines were dangerous, causing autism, diabetes and other serious health problems.

Of course DCS would have been knocking on my door as soon as we'd hung up, but hey, what're they gonna do, take my dust bunnies into protective custody?

12. Centers for Disease Control and Department of Childrens Services
You'd know the second if you had kids. Every four year old knows to call them if they're don't get their way.

9. I think the best approach to any of these polls is to refuse to respond ---
Edited on Sat Feb-02-08 03:10 AM by defendandprotect
that is, perhaps, except exit polls ---

Whether or not a "push poll," it seems to me that all the polls have questions which are rather
dumb and framed --- and rarely are the questions based on anything that you want to answer about.

11. Bill Kristol is a regular columnist
TIME has gone down hill since I started reading it years ago.

It is definitely MSM and part of the rethug machine.
