Finally a good half-time with Tom Petty
Who couldn't like Tom Petty? The stage setting is great! Loved the flying V guitar & the heart.

9. i loved hearing the story behind some of the songs, can you imagine if he did
give Stevie Nicks "Don't come around here no more"? I love Stevie but i'm glad Tom kept it for himself.

6. Lip-synched. I'm disappointed.
Prince's performance from last year blows this away - and I'm a big Petty fan.

10. No it was not lip-synched.
His guitar player was playing and he knows the words.

11. Sorry. I just checked it via DVR.
Lip-synched. Those were not live vocals.

12. Sorry but it was live!
Not lip synched. Petty does not have to lip synch a Live performance.

13. His vocals were NOT matching up with what he was singing!
Like I said, I'm a Petty fan. But his vocals were not live. I double-checked.

And if you get a chance, check his bass player's backup vocals in 'American Girl.' WAY out of synch.

14. Read my lips your F.O.S.
your DVR is out of synch. It was a taped performance so it could of been technical. Tom Petty does not have to lip sync anything he tours 10 months a year.

17. 5 min. tape delay so watching DVR you can't tell.
Want to second check your conspiracy theory?

20. HAHAHAHAHA!
You could delay it by five HOURS and the audio/video would still play back at the same time they were 'recorded.'

Which his voacls were. I hate to break it to you, fan-girl, but you're wrong on this one. If TP wasn't lip-synching, then his vocals were 'assisted.'

No conspiracy theory. Plenty of bands do it. I saw ZZTop live and Billy Gibbons barely got above a growl all night, but when they did 'Legs,' it was Billy G vocals circa 1985.

When it comes up on YouTube, watch it again - and don't let fan-love blind you.

18. I don't blame him if it is lip sync'd...
I'm a recording engineer, and it's technically daunting to try to get good (much less great) sound in these conditions. I didn't see the performance, but I can imagine that the stage was rolled out at half time, and too many things can and do go wrong when a performance like this is squeezed into such a small time slot. I caught a performance by Jewel earlier tonight (at a rodeo competition, I believe), and she was singing with a TV mix (the mix of the record, minus the lead vocals). Her vocal was live, but they didn't feed the music to the broadcast, just the vocal. You could hear the music in the background through the monitors, but it sounded like hell, and all most people at home will realize is that she sounded bad -- they don't know why. In this case, she would have been better off lip syncing. For many artists, lip syncing in these cases isn't a result of not being great singers, it's a defensive move against potentially disastrous technically caused problems.

21. Geez, I'm not criticizing the guy or anything.
I realize that vocals get 'assists' all the time.

I was just pointing it out, and it did sorta disappoint me - but I'm not gonna lose sleep over it or anything.

Some people on this thread refuse to believe that St. Petty would do what's pretty much common practice in Super Bowl shows.

27. No problem. It also occured to me he might not have been given a choice.
Whoever is in charge of staging the show might have required lip syncing only to keep things as simple as possible.

28. No doubt. Even with the 'assist'
it was still better than most halftime shows I've seen in the past few years, with the exception of Prince last year. TP/Campbell is still the epitome of cool in my book, and their shows are always guitar porn of the highest order. :)

Aerosmith and Britney Spears was horrible - they coulda dropped a bunker-buster on the field during that one and I would have been thankful. :)

No stupid pop stars, a good start there. No Stones (sorry, fans, but they were so... anyway), just solid rock, seemingly lacking in big ego stuff. Good choice!
